MtBE is not a 'known" carcinogen, but it is considered a "potential" carcinogen. Especially when you take into account it's breakdown products. Some of it's breakdown products may indeed be known carcinogens, I don't know. The MtBE, like any organic compound biodegrades.

If MtBE use were started today, after 25 years of UST regulations and replacing old steel underground storage tanks with double walled fiberglass tanks with interstitial monitors, the problems with would probably be minimal. But like anything else, since it was condemned 25 years ago, they'll never go back to it.
