( I think it will be a long time before GM "goes away". Didn't the US taxpayer bail out Chrysler so Mercedes Benz could eventually buy it?)

But Chrylser did pay back everything to the government before Mercedes bought them out. It was done with a good plan, that meant both upper management and laborers took cuts. A car was built with comfort and quality. A warrantee that beat all others. GM is not going away, someone will bail them out but they have to come up with a major plan. And I agree all american made vehicle need to be designed better. But I still have problems buying Non-American.

Wow! I can't believe you would say something like that. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I'm not a Ford guy, but certainly would not want to see them put out of business.

Obviously, you have not experienced the depth of the problems I've had with GM cars. Based on my experience, the world would be a better place without them. The sad part is that they come up with some really pretty, neat and unique cars, but do such a crummy job of designing and building them. It reminds me of the British car industry.

I would reallyl be surprised if GM went in the tank. I am not a GM fan but I don't see them going anyplace. I do drive a suburban but my work truck is Ford. Someone somewhere will come to the plate just like the government did with Chrysler. GM just needs to put a plan together, the union, the management has to go along with it and it will work out. Just at least copy what Chrysler did or hire Lee Iacoca. A good company in trouble could just end up on top before you know it.

Chevrolet is as common as apple pie in the United States.

Chrysler was not baled out by the government.. Chrysler aquired a guarantee backing of a loan from the gvt in case they defaulted.,. Big difference here.. The snake who sold Chrysler down the tubes is now the same snake running GM.

Larry, I think you're right, but without that guaranteed backing by the government, I don't think Chrysler could have gotten the loan, so to my way of thinking, the government gambled taxpayer money (and won this time) to bail Chrysler out. So I'd still see it as the government "bailing" them out. If you "bail" someone out of jail, it's your money, and you get it back IF he shows up for trial. So, wouldn't you say you bailed him out? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yup, they're all upstanding, caring people at Chrysler! Think GM's learning from their history?

Yep, Bird, totally agree that the gov bailed them out. However, the implication above was that it cost the taxpayers. Maybe it was a gamble, and maybe it was a sound investment, but regardless, it turned out to be the right decision, at least in the short term.
