Is it a SCUT or a CUT?

Kennyd I never heard of "Limited" 3PH, what is it? I know what Cat 0,1,2 & 3 are. I would say SCUT has more to do with the frame and tire size. They could have Cat 0 or Cat 1 3pt, some could have high HP so HP can go into the CUT's.

The "limited" 3PH's don't lift as high, and the lower arms sometimes don't spread far enough apart to fit some implements.

Here is an example of a Woods PHD marketed to such machines: Woods PHD 25 And the King Kutter XB series stuff is also sold as "limited" 3PH compatible.

Interesting thread. Wonder when anyone started worrying about it. I like old Farmalls. Had a 1941 "A" for a while. Always wanted a Cub. Or, second to that a Deere LA or AC "G".

In the 12 years I have looked at those, I have never heard reference to those being catagorzied as anything but a tractor. Pretty dang good ones too.

Robert, I agree, the old iron tractors were referred to as just that, tractors. Back then they were catagoried by how many rows they could plow at one time, hence the term "one row" tractors, "two row" tractors, etc.

In todays modern smaller diesel tractors that have sometimes more horsepower than the larger built older tractors came the term CUT. But I prefer my old iron over the newer ones, just my preference, we all have them.

I too would like to find a deal on a AC "G" or a Farmall Cub, great lil cultivating tractors.

True. And, they most old iron had Nebraska Testing, so you not only knew engine hp/tq, pto/belt hp/tq, but actual drawbar hp.

I have not idea what my old Kubota B series, or my current NH TC40, have for drawbar ratings.

It seems that the SCUTs have a lawn mowing component in their heritage. I know they have evolved to be able to do much more than this, but the very small wheels, coupled with the belly-mower wheelbase defines a SCUT for me.

I agree with your opinion. SCUT's are mowers that can do some tractor stuff. CUT's are tractors that can do some mowing stuff. My Massey 1215 is definately a SCUT even though the 3PH seems to be a full Cat. 1 hitch.

I agree, good definition...also think can the machine actually pull a sub soiler, plow or disk harrow and do an acceptable job...if not it is a lawn mower or if you prefer a lawn tractor..

Then what would my Simplicity 9518 be? It was used as a large riding mower. It didnt come with a MMM so I removed all of the MMM parts. Now it looks more like a tractor. Yet it is the same size as my Yanmar so does that make it a SCUT or a CUT? The 9518 is the same as the Massey 1010, Hinomoto C174, and Allis Chalmers 5015.

My MF gc2400 has a full cat. 1 hitch. The New Hollands also have the full cat 1 hitch. I believe both are SCUTS.

Still not sure why they put limited cat. 1 on JD, Kubota and Cub/Yanmar.

All Kubota BXs have had full Cat 1s for about 5 years (ie: BX1850, 2350, 1860, 2660, 2360, BX24, BX25 ). Still are SCUTs to me as are the MFs and NHs...
It's not HP, lift capacity, nor weight, as some of the little guys have as much or more than some of the CUTs. To me it's the size of the rear wheels. 12" wheels is a SCUT.

That's how I decide the difference between a riding mower, a lawn tractor, and a garden tractor. The wheels get bigger respectively.
