To haul diesel in a 50 gallon barrel (plastic food grade) in the back of your pickup?

I built a platform to haul water barrels and my fuel barrel around (A metal cage basically that my pickle forks can lift). I have to drive 3 miles to the off road fuel vendor, none of which is on the interstate. I was just wondering if this was illegal. Not that I am going to stop unless caught...

Oh, my state is Washington. My neighbor has done this for years, but he lays the barrels on the side.

You can't ground the barrel while filling, so technically it is not legal. This is the same reason you are supposed to remove your 5 gallon containers from your vehicle when fueling.

I had a 55 gallon plastic barrel sitting on a wooden pallet for my diesel. And with my forks on the FEL, I'd just set the barrel and pallet in the pickup, go to my off road fuel distributor, they would fill it, and when I got home I'd set it off with tractor again. I can understand what Tim means, but if it had been illegal in Texas, I think the distributor would have known and refused to fill the barrel. Maybe it's different for diesel vs. gasoline.

I think Bird is correct. Gasoline would be a no-no, but diesel is not explosive.

I do know that to haul fuel (of any type) in a single container that has a capacity of more than 70 gallons is illegal, UNLESS the vehicle is placarded and the driver has a CDL with Haz/Mat endorsement.

I know it's illegal to fill any tank while it's in the back of your truck, regardless of size. You are even supposed to get the portable generator out to fill it. That's a law in this state (Florida).
I know of one gas station in this area where there have been citations written for this.
So, it may be the case where you live that if you want to carry this tank full, your going to have to load it full, or risk getting a ticket. approx. 350lbs

Wonder how that works with one of these:

local filling station i use for gas / diesel has signs that says illegal to dispense GAS into non approved containers.

don't mention fuel oil though :)

but that's just my area.. best to do your own local research.. and keep safety in mind.

remember.. you can get conductive rubber ground straps to prevent static on plastic bottles...

1*It's legal.
2*side or on end is legal .

3*This only concerns pick ups with bedliners.
4*Check again it should only apply to trucks with a bed liner in them.
5*Sounds like the law may be applied wrongly .
6*That is down right stupid for the law to expect some one to do that.

7*&8*No need to do this especially in pickups with out bed liners.

9*I do know that to haul fuel (of any type) in a single container that has a capacity of more than 70 gallons is illegal. .
9*The limit you can haul is 120 gallons no matter how many or how few containers you use.
Useing 2 55 gallon drums with a 110 gallon total keeps you legal.

10*Wonder how that works with one of these?

i know my f450 has a TRAX trasfer technology 70g xfer tank in the bed.. and it's a fibergalss 'toy hauler' bed.. not a metal bed. this is in addition to the underslung torpedo rail tanks.. as far as I know.. trax tanks are some of the only dot rated and approved tanks for direct interconnection to the truck fuel system too.
