Am I getting older, and can't stand the heat, or is this summer hot, and humid ? I think PA has been very, very hot, and humid this year. Today we got a thunderstorm, and the humidity rose. We've got 3 air conditioners running, and can't step foot outside. Poor tractor is sitting in the shed. Anyone else think we are having a hot, humid summer?

How's the weather down in Texas? I'll bit its horrible. Glad you replied. I pick my first tomato last week. I've got about a bushel so far. We had some very dry weather in the last 2 months. Sweet Corn is not going to be good at all. 62 plants of Tomatoes should get me some of them. Have you got a good recipe for canning Pickles? I remember my Mom canning them. I can't find her recipe. Any help would be great. Kent

I think you are just getting older. Leastways, that how I figure it is with me. I hate summer. I hate the heat. I hate to sweat. It would not hurt my feelings if the temperature outside never got above 65 degrees.

I wasn't like that when I was a kid. During the summer my brother and I played baseball in the afternoon heat, ran and played in the woods all day long and rode our bikes down a paved highway three or four miles just to get a coke and candybar at the little country store. Our house did not have a/c but we were content to pull the sliding glass door closed until there was only a crack and let the attic fan pull a breeze across our faces to cool us off. At night we would go to sleep with only open windows and the attic fan to keep us cool. My folks would cut the fan off after they figured we were asleep and yet every morning we would still wake up covered with a sheet.

Do you reckon we become less heat tolerant as we get older or maybe we have just become conditioned to air conditioning in our maturing years?

I'm with you on the temps. I never complain about the cold but the summer does get me. Part of it is that in my work I'm in and out a lot but like to try to look somewhat presentable. These temps make that difficult if not impossible. Some days lately have had me taking three and four showers in a day.

Yep, Your point about "Air-Conditioning" is very valid. I worked in a freezer about 15 years ago, and I'm still very bothered by the heat. Cold is fine. I guess I'm thinking of a move to Alaska. Do you think that may be the answer? By the way my brother and I did all those things too. Heck, we had no air conditioning when I was young. We were lucky to have a good fan. Thanks for making me feel better. Kent

I would settle for a summer home in Alaska and spent the winters here in Texas. Kinda like being a reverse snowbird./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I wonder what kind of summertime highs they have in Alaska? I know that Calgary, Alberta even gets a few hot days during the summer and, according to my daughter who lives there, those few days can be tough because no one has a/c.

Since moving to Alaska is not a viable option for me I guess I will just vegetate in the a/c as much as possible until Oct. rolls around.

I totally agree. I guess I'll go out to run my tractor, and weed my garden. The rest of the summer will be spent in my AC'ed rooms. Rough times we live in. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Oh did I mention work. Darn I forgot. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Yep, at least for us old folks. I can definitely tell that it gets tougher as I get older, 'cause like a lot of you, I never lived, worked, or went to school where there was any air-conditioning until I was 19, and got by just fine. Now . . ., actually I guess we're having a mild summer; mid-70s for lows and mid to high 90s in the afternoon, but no 100 degree weather yet. But it seems to me that the humidity is worse this year (my imagination maybe?). We had a breeze this morning and it was the first morning in a long time that the grass wasn't soaking wet with dew. I get out at daylight or before to do whatever I have to do outside, come in and shower by noon and then stay in if I can. My youngest daughter came to visit this morning and brought her Lawnboy lawnmower for me to clean up, replace a missing bolt, change oil, and sharpen the blade. So I was through and came in at 9:30 a.m. and my clothes were soaked even though I worked slow and certainly not any hard work at all.

I had picked a half dozen Israel melons and a gallon or so of small bell peppers before she got here; don't think my watermelons are going to do any good at all, and I've already mowed down and tilled under everything else in the garden.

Hmm, I thought my wife had been using my mother's old recipes for dill, sweet, and bread and butter pickles, but I just asked her and she said she just buys the boxes of pickling spices at the grocery store and uses the recipe on the back of the boxes.

Chris, I think you have the right idea. My parents lived in Anchorage the last 7 years before dad retired, and then for several years, he and mother lived in a travel trailer in Anchorage in the summer and Port Aransas, TX, in the winter./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

And Alaska, like Texas, has some widely varying temperatures in different parts of the state. In '91, I was working with my brothers in Anchorage and when the temperature got up to 70 F, we started having customers come in to get their car air-conditioners checked and/or fixed./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif And the July 4 weekend, we drove up to Prudhoe Bay and the high that day was 38./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Sure wish I was at Seward right now fishing./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif
