Grrrr..........Very nice of you to offer to help. I'm OK, but your offer to help is great.

I decided to start phasing out Symantec over a year ago - it takes way too much horsepower to run (slowing everything else down) and is an absolute BUGGER to update or change license keys (from single to group, or vice versa) or remove it entirely. It took me about a day of solid work to come up with a process that seems to snag and remove it all (much of it by hand - you can't just get rid of it via Uninstall).
I use nod32 by Eset now... costs a bit less and is a lot more lightweight to run.

I use AVG - Free Edition, don't want to test it on the Kioti site though...

Yeah, Symantec are great aren't they. Give you a crap product and then make it impossible to remove.

As it happens, there is actually a removal tool they made themselves to get rid of it, which forces it out.

Norton Removal Tool

Even then, it still sometimes leaves resource hogger services behind.

AVG is good, but they have been somewhat overtaken by Avast, who now offer a free version which is generally thought to be better than AVG by many security experts. Since AVGs last version, it seems they are going down Nortons bloatware path, with less emphasis on the actually security.

FREE avast! antivirus 4.x Home Edition, anti-spyware & anti-rootkit for Windows

I personally use Nod32 as well because it is very quiet and doesn't interfere at all.

Symantec does sux, but since I use my PC for work, Ihave to use what it for any support from them. Wrong virus protection, I get no support for any of the other problems I have to us. I wish they'd go back to McAfee... Not the best, but it was way better then Symantec.

I purchased 5 laptops recently.... 4 for relatives, 1 for me. It was my job to set them up for everybody. They all came with Norton already loaded, set to time out after a while. Knowing from sad experience that I needed to REMOVE norton and install Avast!.... that's what I did.

Norton is extremely hard to remove... even running all available removal tools STILL leaves LOTS of pieces laying around in the machine...

Agreed, AVG has historically been good, but numerous computer literate buddies are now seeing that AVAST has numerous advantages and are moving to it. I recommend AVAST! AND, it's free for personal use.

I don't know about McAfee, we use it at work and it SUX!!! it REALLY slows down the systems, part of it is in the poor setup. With Mcrappy running in the background it can take me more than 5 minutes just to open Outlook to read my mail. There has got to be something better out there. I have been using AVG at home... but the latest version, which they force you to upgrade to, is certainly starting to get more bloated and 'Symantec' like. :( I had never heard of AVAST before... but based on comments here... it is time to check it out. Agreed, every new system I get that has anything Norton on it... it gets removed FIRST thing.

Yeah, McAfee are pretty much just as bad as Norton, just more common on multiple license setups. It is still a heap of rubbish to be honest.

Avast is the way to go at the moment. I have even seen threads on security forums where they have been considering to not recommend AVG following its latest bloated version. All good things come to an end.

It caught it on mine. I had been thinking of going with Avast too. When I updated to the newest version of AVG it was very slow so I un-installed it and re-installed it but without turning on the "safe search". From what I read that will bring your computer to a crawl. So far so good, but if I have any problems I will be switching to Avast.

With three teenagers in the house, I am always afraid they will open emails or go to sites that may create problems. After getting three viruses on two different computers while using AVG in about a two month time span, we changed all four of our computers to Avast. It has been a good while since that and we have had no more problems.
