Mowing Is mowing a pasture supposed to be this hard?

Thanks :) A lot of hard work has gone into it in the last couple of years and it's starting to come together.

The tractor is "Euro spec" so it's a bit different to what you're used to. The front load is a 533 with self levelling and they replaced the standard joystick with the fancier and more ergonomic version. The front tyres were standard. I am pretty sure that they are 320/85 R20 (12.4 R20), but I'll double check tomorrow.

Here are some more pictures

One thing that I forgot to change when I ordered was the standard lift arms with the ball type attachments. They are a pain so I have ordered the telescopic versions. They should be here next week. You can see the pick up hitch which was also an option. It's the best thing ever if you're hooking up trailers or trailed implements.

Sorry for hijacking your thread a bit Corey.

Ah, Corey has had enough "advice" for awhile, anyway! He's probably moving "way ahead of his wallet" right now with all these different ideas!

Did notice that funny "yellow" thing down there where the drawbar is supposed to be.. with the long, vertical stabilizer rods. Interesting. And, from the looks of your tires they appear to be radials and considerably larger than the OEM tire offered in North America.

I think the UK has a better configured 5065e than the US market!

(That's a good lookin' fence you've got there as well! You do good work.)

Corey,
If you are hitting mounds with the blades set at six inch height then you really need to smooth everything up before mowing. Here is a few pics of my landplane scraper with the blades set flush, I think it would do wonders for your pasture mounds. I use mine to smooth up small fields and lawn areas and have had good success with it. I built it to smooth out my own lawn when putting it in back in 2009.

Corey;

It's great to see what some real mowers experience. I am learning more and mre everyday.
I have 2..5 acres in south FL, run an 855 with a 4 foot rhino with about 2 acres in grass. I've been mowing this patch since '90 but with the 855 since '95.
Fireant hills just cause a slight blip in the rpm's and there are less and less every year. I have gone over some that were nearly two feet high and three in diameter. All the concrete corners on my culverts are now radius's (sic). All the limestone rocks are now gravel. Irecently helped out a neighbor while her husband was deployed and ran over an old car fan buried in the grass next to some full paint cans. Not only did the fan punch through the deck top but the paint covered the bare metal right after.
My wife brought the rig back from mowing not long ago with a broken sway chain and a back tire off the rim! Don't ask. These things are dangerous in more ways than i can count. In a hurry to shut down in a thunderstorm, i tugged pretty hard in the tail wheel. Do you know the sound when you pull a chicken leg off the thigh? Imagine that louder in the air and in your brain. I pulled my bicep muscle right off the bone in my forearm, but i do have a nice "Z" scar now tha speaks to me every time i'm on the 855 now.

Stay safe!! BUT fun is where you find it.

Ahhh, Steve - you big showoff!! (Do you have a travel limit on contract work..? I want my hay fields to look like that!!)

Got a question, though. If you tilt the front edge up (less aggressive cut) doesn't that make the rear blade cut deeper?

Lots of advice is always good, yep, just bought a 3 point harrow so with the tractor payments and the harrow payments my wallet is dried up for a while. Lol.

I tried with my grading scraper but all it did was skim over the top and not cut down any mounds. Your pasture looks beautiful.

With the slip clutch set up properly all it does now is blip the RPMs now. I hope I don't run over a lot of those things, sounds rough for you, your tractor and your mower.

I've wandered the same thing when lifting the front end up. I know it says front end up will be less aggressive cut and level or slightly nose down with mulch the grass into finer clippings.

Larry,
If you look at the third picture above you will see that the rear of the skids estends aways behind the rear blade. In tilled ground you can cut more with the rear blade you tilt the plane back, in harder ground it will tend to ride more on the rear skids which will lessen the cutting action. In my experience in both soft and hard ground including pastures and lawn areas the amount of cut is easy to control. For what I use it for the straight blade setup is superior to the angled blades because when you tilt the angled blades it causes them to be out of level as the leading edge is raised higher than the trailing edge. With the straight blade setup you can tilt the blade and still keep the blades paralell with the surface. These planes work well in forward and reverse too I should mention. I think a 10' landplane grader with 6' skids and about 1200 to 1500 lbs would be perfect for you 5075M.

Corey,
If you ride over the mounds without cutting them I suspect you need more weight. My landlplane weighs about 950 lbs and will cut down most mounds in one pass but sometimes a large mound may take more passes.

Here is a shot of my pasture from the office window,:) the weeds are bad this year.. Lou

<img src="http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=317750"/><img src="http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=317751"/><img src="http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=317752"/><img src="http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=317753"/>,

That's a beautiful pasture, I hope I can get mine nice and green like that, right now it's all yellow from what I think is long dead grass, the good grass is well below it and is just barely visible (no nutrients and lack of sunlight from the taller dead stuff.) when the thistles come in the pasture is usually littered with them to the point I get letters in the mail from the county telling me to get rid of the thistle. I don't want to spray the pasture cause I need to keep the horses in it so I'm hoping keeping it mowed at 6" that the grass will sprout up and outgrow the thistles and kill them through starvation.
