Tractor
Kubota MX5100
I have a MX5100 HST 4wd that only has about 100 hours on it. The other day my boy used the tractor and put it in High gear and drove around for a while (without permission mind you). Anyway, he said that when he would go up a rise, the tractor would slow down so he pushed the pedal down further and he said it was like a clutch was slipping. He said a couple of times it almost stopped. My question is, did he do any damage to the HST system? I used it yesterday and it seems to be making more noise than it use too. Is there any adjustments or anything I need to check?

I've been worried sick ever since this happened. :(

You should be OK. Just check the fluid levels.
Guess I would be keeping the keys in my pocket.

I wouldn't sweat it. In high gear, it just didn't have the power to go up the hill. High gear on my B3030 is pretty much good for only going down hill and on the level--and mainly with an empty loader.

"the tractor would slow down so he pushed the pedal down further"

You're probably fine, just give the boy lessons on how the HST works.

Its the inherent design of HST, you must lighten the pedal when you loose forward momentum to maintain drive, or put it low.
The petal is not like a car, its a hydraulic valve, that is opened and closed while RPM is constant, the more fluid that is released, the faster it will go, but once the inertia is lost, it will not do any better to add more fluid... less is more.
I'm no professional on HST, but have had one for 10 years, and its the way you have to think..

Don't sweat it, we have all been there, so now you know to put it in low next time you attempt the same hill, you will not notice it at all then..

Relax, your new tractor is fine.. hide the keys!

How long did this take place? It should be fine unless he overheated the hydro fluid.

If junior is gonna operate the tractor he needs some training.

No, no damage, the worse that can happen is the Hydrostat relief valve will open when it is pushing up against a load. You don't go up hills in HI, and of course you don't press down more on the pedal when it bogs down, you let off, but you can tell him all of that. You can encounter something similiar by putting the transmission in HI range, and push up against a dirt or gravel pile with the loader, the hydrostat relief valve will open. Of course you don't want to stay like that all day, as the fluid will heat up, but just attempting to take a steep hill in HI is not going to break anything.

Just out of curiosity, how old is your son? I have a near-three-year-old, and I think I am in for a similar story before too long. Just wondering how long I've got.

My son inlaw will sometimes use my tractor when I'm not here. So I try to leave it in mid range when I'm done.

I think you should sell me the tractor really cheap, then you won't have to worry about any possible damage.
