Buying Advice Is pt425 a good option for dragging brush

Thanks for the picts.

Boy, having a good tool sure can amplify the amount of work you can do! I never get tired of looking of pictures of your place, looks like a nice slope.

Thanks, the tool certainly makes the difference. I posted these pics on Facebook, with this status: "Some tools aren't just useful, they empower you to do things that would not have been feasible otherwise... "

Power Trac could/should use the slogan of "Empower yourself with Power Trac..." or "Get empowered with Power Trac..."

As much as I love the power trac this is probably a better choice providing the price is right. I don't know what it would cost. When doing tree work you are constantly on and off the machine and this machine is better for this

Lucky that blokes got a hard hat on. That would save him if the tree splitting and fell on him. Oops safety police. Sorry, just not how I would have done it.

I've used machines like the Zahn and reckon they suffer from insufficient weight and are unstable. Good for light material handling. Better to rent a small Bobcat or buy one of those Power Trac, they look alright.

One thing to remember with the Zahn or the Power Trac, you will not be able to load a dump truck with these machines. For example if you want to load logs to be used for firewood. For that kind of ability in a small size you would need an Avant which I am starting to see more dealers for in this country. Unfortunately it will cost you some major coin.

The biggest advantage that the stand-on mini-skidsteers have going for them is their size. They will go through a residential "garden gate" and get into the back yard. But, with about 500lb of lift capability (many/most of them) they don't really compare to the PT-422 or PT-425. Because the mini-skids are intended for commercial use, they will typically have a higher level of build quality and overall construction -- but they're also priced accordingly, as are the European competitors to the PT, the Avant or Multione. The Avants, for example, cost about twice as much as the same size Power Trac, if not more...

I've never seen a Multione in person, in order to price one out. I would occasionally like to have the extending lift arms of the Avant, but I can't rationalize the expense. I don't have as much money invested in my Power Trac and all of its attachments as a bare, base Avant costs...

Can't load a dump truck. That's why I got a dump trailer. Got one big enough so I can also transport the pt with it.
How do the avants compare to pt 24xx series of the same size? As far as dump height go's.

The loading height is why I ditched my pickup truck and bought a car hauler trailer. Perfect for the PT400 series to load and be transported on.

I have an avant 420 coming on Friday so I can demo it. I have only seen pictures and videos of it so far. Still want to see the power trac since I can buy two 425s with an attachment for each for the price of the avant. I will be loading a trailer and rear loading the trucks with the logs so the 425s lift height should be fine. Our trucks have the enclosed chip bodies so log loading is limited. If anyone within a couple hours of Ann Arbor Mi has a power trac I could look at in person I could buy lunch. Thanks again for everyone's input

Please share some pics and your impressions of the Avant 420…

Yes, please share regarding the Avant. I'm going to look at one soon. Just got back from Tazwell where I demoed the PT 425 and 1430. But that's another post.

On YouTube videos, the 420 looks WAY under powered for hilly terrian (would barely climb over one small hill in the video). However, the 428 looks nice. But now we're up to almost $30K (saw last year's model advertised for $28K on Machinery Trader). Is it worth twice the price of a similar sized PT? If there was a dealer close by, then maybe. As it is, my closest dealer is 150 miles away. Still, that much closer than PT.

I have an older Power-Trac 422 with over 2500 hours. It has the body like a newer 425 with the engine of a 422. The tractor weighs in at about 1200 Lbs + attachment. It is neither extreamly heavy nor overly light and is easily moved on a tilt-bed, one-ton, trailer.

I use the grapple bucket with the short teeth for my brush moving needs. It is the envy of the neighborhood as it can move between 800 and 1000 Lbs in a single grab. (I have added weight to the back and made a few modifications to stiffen the lift arms.) The hydraulics have more than engough power as designed.

My local tree service has a large chipper. We used it to fill their two axel truck 4 times in one 7-hour day moving the brush with my Power-Trac. I would use the bucket to smash down a pile, grab it and swing one end into the chipper. Drop it, then get around the end and shove it in. Very little hand work was required.

Their guy remarked, "We gotta get one of these!", as it was his job to move the brush by hand. He had an easy day running the chipper and only handling a few scraps. We even picked up a few larger pieces up to 16" by the end of the log and just shoved them in.

Before modification (as from the factory) the PT could easily lift an 18" oak log 6 feet long and carry it, at will, up and down my back hill which is 23 degrees steep (not 23% grade).

If I had one complaint, I broke the bucket tilt mechanism when I was ramming it into 8" stumps to push them from the ground. (I stiffened the lift arms when I fixed the tilt.) This was the only "weak" part of the design and I only broke it with what could be termed serious abuse.

The attachments are wonderfull and change quickly....un-powered attachment change in 10 seconds without leaving the seat....powered attachment change in less than a minute because I have to get off the seat to snap the hydraulic quick-connects.

Lift hieght of the Avant is much higher, but the PT can place most things tailgate high on my lifted Dodge.

I also like that most attachments are welded 1/4 inch (or more) plate steel and not stamped.

For those without a big budget, they also advertise used PTs...I bought mine this way.

Is it perfec, no. Is it pretty darned useful...Oh yeah!

Don't judge the machine by their videos. They are in a word...Lame! I work it far harder and it is much more capable than shown.

I showed some of those videos to my wife, she said they should get somebody that's used a PT to do the demonstrations.
