The most memorable display of drums I ever saw (live) was Carmine Appice..
performing with Jeff Beck and Tim Bogert...what a show...!

For newer bands, I love Alter Bridge with Miles Kennedy singing. Slash with Miles was great too. Also like Dakona, but they aren't together anymore and Vergos Merlot to name a few newer ones that haven't been mentioned yet.

thanks for the thread George. Giving me a few to check out that I haven't heard of.

Thanks? That is some good stuff. I hear so much in them: Bonnie Rait, Allman, blues, even some R&B. I'll probably buy some of their stuff.

Edit: There is some Aretha in there too. I'm going to buy Revelator. I'd heard of that album but never checked it out. Thanks again.

Not only that, but like a lot of things, they're all baby-boomer centered too (for the time being). :cuckooclock:

Rock is pretty much a baby-boomer genre. Some before. Some after. But mostly during.

There is someone we haven't talked about and that is Jack White. It seems to me he was one of the last big acts before rock started to fade. I came late to White but I'm a big fan now. His interview with Dan Rather was excellent. I don't know where he ranks with the guitar greats but he can crank on one for sure. I love the rawness that he plays with.

Slightly off topic but Dan Rather's The Big Interview series has been excellent. I was never impressed with Rather as a news man. Heard him speak when I was in college and was even less impressed. But he has done a superb job with this series. Real standout interviews were Jack White, Merle Haggard, the Doors surviving members, Steve Miller, Geddy Lee (amazing interview), Dolly Parton. Did not like the Greg Allman or Robert Plant interviews much but that was not Rather's fault. The interview with some of the REM members was okay but it got political and Stipe never interviews well it seems to me. I think he is a genius but he always seems to trying hard to say something impressive or cool and it often comes off as insincere and not very candid. It might just be a product of his shyness.

I like Peart but would put Max Roach, Buddy Rich, Steve Smith on top of my list.

Peart is a standup guy; he has done great tributes to Buddy Rich(Rich was a hero to Peart and Bonham).

I agree with most of your points and in the context of this discussion I was just talking rock musicians.

As for drummers I see Peart as the undisputed master. Moon and Bonham brought a very different aspect to drumming and they fit their respective bands perfectly and uniquely but certainly not with the amount of technical ability that Peart has. Peart has also managed to stay alive.
