but I can't spell worth a lick in this sorry excuse for a language.

I had a guy lecture me once on another website, telling me that "You have to be stupid if you don't spell wright".

I agreed with him in his case. ;)

In most cases, as long as someone types good enough, and can spell good enough to get his/her point across.. I think it's pretty low to pick on minor syntax or gramatical / spelling errors. Usually the people that do that don't have any real basis to refute the argument at hand and have to resort to a red herring to draw attention away from the real issue.

The only time i bring up syntax, grammer or spelling.. is if the message is vauge, or just plain undecipherable.. etc.. then.. it's usually only to ask for a clarification of the post.. etc.

While this is true for the initial post and thread, not spelling correctly sure makes it difficult to find what you're looking for in a search. :)

I agree.... Something that annoys me is when people write titles to threads that give no indication as to what the thread is about.

Don't see it too much on this forum but on other there are lots of threads with titles like 'Help' or with all different types of symbols and things that make it impossible to find in a search.

Well, the 'potatoe' reference comes from Dan Quayle (I think). The problem was not that he spelled it wrong but he corrected a kid who had spelled it right! So he really stepped in it.

Based on that, he was thoroughly branded by the media as an ignorant man, which was simply not the truth. So in that regard, I have NO sympathy for Gore getting gored for his internet statement. Quayle made a blunder. Gore was trying to grab some of the glory. All is fair in love, war and politics.

I agree with Soundguy about typos and simple misspellings (how do you spell misspell????). I often type faster than I can think.....the sad thing is that I still type very slowly.

However, if I'm having a technical debate with someone, say, about the function of the medulla oblongata and they repeatedly spell medulla oblongata incorrectly and they are supposed to be experts on the medulla oblongata, yes, I'm going to question their expertise if they can't even spell what they are supposed to be experts in.

A very good point.

I always TRY to learn something new every day. Even if it's as simple as learning the correct spelling for the most basic of one syllable words. I'm all for doing things as well as possible. BUT. When all is said and done, I'd much rather post something meaningfull, helpful to someone, and maybe even intelligent than a worthless buch of garbage that would draw a big smile from my 9th grade English teacher.

In a perfect world, I'd like the inteligent post that pleases that teacher.

As a retired teacher I had to chuckle at the statement, I'm pretty sure it was a joke.

OK, so now I feel pretty stupid. Could someone please explain this for the engineer in the crowd? What's the joke? I'll try to return the favor if this thread takes a turn to include a discussion of thermodynamics and the effects of heat on reaction kinetics or anything of the sort. :)
