Is the 790 out dated?

They are manufactured by Yanmar, in Japan.

The MFWD version must be tough-to-turn!? )</font>

If I remember correctly Dave its the other way around. The 4 WD version comes standard with power steering and the 2 WD version comes standard with manual steering.

That is correct.

The MFWD version is standard with power steering. I'm not sure if you can add it to the 2WD or not.

Vince & Wood,

Your discriptions of which model comes with PS make more sense.

The reason I ask, is because on Deere's "Build Your Own 790" web-page, it offers a 2WD "with Power Steering", and a 4WD that doesn't say "with PS". When I dig deeper on the "Specifications" page, it shows the hydraulic pump capacity, but doesn't break it down into separate "Steering" and "Implement" flow rates ???

Thanx, Dave.

I went to the NH dealer last night to look at the TC33DA as compared to the Case DX33. It was there that I first saw a NH TC30. The guy said it was brought out to compete in the price wars with the 790. He gave me a trifold brochure showing how the lift capacity on the TC was way higher than the Deere. I didn't know the 790 was being marketed as a price leader, but I'll need to check it out at the Deere store.

How would you guys compare the two? Should I post something about this on the NH board to get their opinions, or do most guys skip around the forums and so would be likely to read this and comment here?

I looked at both of them before I went for the Deere. I'll admit, I am a Deere fan, so take my words with that in mind. I liked both tractors. I did think the 790's a bit more robust in design and build. Also, I got a heck of a deal on a used 790...too good to pass up. The TC-30 was a real close second.

As far as lifting capacities, the 790 is an old design (which I said in a post and has been repeated by many others). For the 790's time of design, I'm sure it was "cutting edge", but that was 20 years ago.
But one must also determine how much lifting capacity is necessary. The heaviest implement I have is a 60" rotary cutter which weighs about 625 pounds or so. The 790 handles that fine...and doesn't stress the tractor. The maximum lift on the loader is about 610 pounds at 88". How often are you planning to lift that much at that height? Now, comparing lift capacities at 18" above the ground, or breakout force might be a more realistic statistic to use.
I find the capacities of the 790 more then adequate for my usage as a residential operator with 3 acres (plus some brush cutting for a neighbor).

I'm just having a heck of a time deciding what machine to move up to. There are definite good things about the suspension seat and tilt wheel for a guy who is getting a little creaky now and then, mostly from lifting things that should have had a tractor or two guys helping. But the stuff about longevity of electronics is pretty important, too. My little Kubota is running fine, despite being 30 years old. Ditto my Cadet 109/129. Very simple things to work on.

I would not be happy if a tractor got it's electronics fried because I accidentally touched an electic fence or it got wet or something. I would hope those things have been taken into account, but I just trust mechanical things a lot more than electrons, which always seem to get mad at me now and then, especially with these computers at school. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
