"How would you guys compare the two? Should I post something about this on the NH board to get their opinions, or do most guys skip around the forums and so would be likely to read this and comment here? "
I looked at both of them before I went for the Deere. I'll admit, I am a Deere fan, so take my words with that in mind. I liked both tractors. I did think the 790's a bit more robust in design and build. Also, I got a heck of a deal on a used 790...too good to pass up. The TC-30 was a real close second.
As far as lifting capacities, the 790 is an old design (which I said in a post and has been repeated by many others). For the 790's time of design, I'm sure it was "cutting edge", but that was 20 years ago.
But one must also determine how much lifting capacity is necessary. The heaviest implement I have is a 60" rotary cutter which weighs about 625 pounds or so. The 790 handles that fine...and doesn't stress the tractor. The maximum lift on the loader is about 610 pounds at 88". How often are you planning to lift that much at that height? Now, comparing lift capacities at 18" above the ground, or breakout force might be a more realistic statistic to use.
I find the capacities of the 790 more then adequate for my usage as a residential operator with 3 acres (plus some brush cutting for a neighbor).
