Is the Cyber Truck a Flop?

Pretty sure it was a Range Rover or Land Rover SUV. The article I saw just showed a quick picture of the front of the vehicle and the damage was moderate, for the damage to the CT and other vehicles it it.

The range extender option has been axed. Also, about 10,000 units are sitting on lots.

Tesla Reportedly Has $800 Million Worth of Cybertrucks That Nobody Wants
If Elon wants to sell me one cheap, I'll take it. I was very impressed with my Cousin's CT when we went hunting with it last late fall. It was very capable off road in deep snow and hauled 3 of us back into out up north property, 3 of us with rifles, hunting clothes and a cooler and back out with 3 Bambi's in the bed and our rifles and the tree of us, no issue and the snow going in was about 2 feet deep plus we did a creek fording. Never sun a wheel. I was very impressed. Not impressed enough to pay 100+ for one but impressed enough to pay say 30 for one...

Other thing I liked about the CT was the battery pre conditioning. We hunted in below zero temps and with the pre conditioning feature, charge level was a non issue and it took a Supercharge just fine as well.

I have a cousin who was an early Tesla adopter, and had mentioned wanting a CT to replace his aging Model 3 Dual Motor, so I told him last night about the $800M CT's in inventory. I expected to learn Tesla was discounting CT's to get them moving, but he checked and said, "nope... still full-retail pricing."

Because Tesla uses their own retail outlets instead of the usual dealership business model, they may have the freedom to let these things sit a bit longer, rather than having to discount to get them moving. But on the flip side, it's going to get harder and harder to convince buyers to pay full price for CT's after they've been sitting on an inventory lot for many months or even over a year.

Personally, I wouldn't drive one if it were free. I'm not some EV hater, I'd really enjoy a nice Tesla P90D, but that CT is just a bit too stupid for me to ever want to be seen in one. I also don't like the idea of watching my 7000# trailer pass me, as I drive down the road with it.

It appears that all these new 'upstarts' are adopting the Tesla philosophy of selling their wares direct instead of through authorized dealers. The 'VW Scout' is one that bubbles right up as is the other 'new' electric truck.

I see Stellantis is mothballing their electric hybrid truck which is probably a good thing for them actually. They have poured millions into that sinking ship already and I don't see them realizing any profit anyway.

I don't see that as becoming a mainstream vehicle either. It's way overpriced for one thing and it's a niche vehicle for another.

I still like the CT from personal experience as I've expounded about in other comments, but not at the price point it's at currently and the Scout, no way ever.

My opinion is, anyone that destroys vehicles or damages dealerships to make a political point, they need to be incarcerated for a long time.

Actions have consequences, least in my world they do.

With more and more 'startups' and more vehicles being introduced in the EV / Hybrid marketplace, the thinner the pie slice's get and you can only slice that 'pie' so thin and it becomes unprofitable.

I'd love to own an original IH scout with a Ford 289 engine under the hood, but would have to be the original, not a trademark bought EV copy and certainly not for a 50 grand starting price.

Maybe that's why Tesla chose stainless steel.

So did Bricklin....... One nice thing about brushed stainless is you can 'buff' out scratches with a inline grinder.

All good, in theory. But it can be very difficult, even nearly impossible, to make scratches and dings in brushed stainless go away completely. It's more challenging than most think to match the sheen, direction, and visual characteristics of the original surface when making a repair.

That gets even more difficult when the stainless is clear-coated to minimize staining by everything from finger oils to road salts, as I suspect the CT probably is.

I’ve been seeing painted CT almost daily… this morning it was a all white one.

Same. Probably close to half those I see are either painted or wrapped. One of those I pass more frequently is also white, and it looks a lot less offensive than the stainless, to me. Still ugly, but not nearly as ugly.

Nope, the CT is raw stainless steel without any coating whatsoever. I agree, matching a grain pattern on stainless is next to impossible for a do-it-yourself home shop. I've been working with raw grained metal surfaces for over 40 years. Matching the sanding grit and grain direction is tough. Even on a flat piece of 6061 aluminum sitting on a table it's not easy.

Cleaning the Exterior

To prevent damage to the exterior, immediately remove corrosive substances (such as grease, oil, bird droppings, tree resin, dead insects, tar spots, road salt, industrial fallout, etc.). Do not wait until Cybertruck is due for a complete wash. If necessary, use denatured alcohol to remove tar spots and stubborn grease stains, then immediately wash the area with water and a mild, non-detergent soap to remove the alcohol.
Note
It is normal for the stainless steel exterior to mature over time, resulting in minor changes to the reflective properties and color of the metal.
Dents and Scratches
The stainless steel exterior of Cybertruck is more resistant to dents and dings than most other vehicles. However, Cybertruck does not have a clear coat on the surface of the exterior body panels, meaning any scratches that appear are in the stainless steel panels themselves. Anyone performing scratch repair should refer to the applicable "Exterior Stainless Steel Panel Refinishing" procedure within the Collision Repair Manual on service.tesla.com. In addition, do not use, and/or immediately remove, chemical, corrosive, or non-pH neutral substances (including but not limited to: acidic liquids or materials, grease, oil, tree resin, dead insects, tar spots, road salt, industrial fallout, etc.) as they can cause corrosion on the vehicle's exterior.

Good luck with that. They never made it with that engine.
I collect Rambler and just looked up the 1960-80 Scout engine choices. They did offer the 232 and 258 AMC six...then I saw the 304 V8!...but not an AMC engine.

Learned to drive in one that looked like this: it was dad's comp

any car. He and mom's brother owned an IH dealership. Uncle had the same one but with the white top.

My 5th grade teacher was an old Welsh grandmother, who drove a Scout just like the one in that photo. I was only 10 years old, so had no idea just how cool she was, at the time. :D

My first truck was an International pickup (1970 IIRC) with the 304 engine in it. Solid engine, though for some reason thermostats didn't last more than a year or so. Theoretically a half ton, but I carried a LOT more in it than that many times!

International did some goofy things. I had a Bronco that had been refitted with Dana 60 axles from a 1973 International SUV, and the prior owner had managed to overheat one rear semi floater axle shaft so bad that it softened and distorted at the wheel bearing.

The reason I found was that, in order to avoid the dreaded seepage of diff oil into the rear brake drums, International had designed the axle assembly with a second set of seals inboard of the bearings, such that the bearings never got fed with gear oil from the diff.

Some prior owner had probably done a bearing swap, and not realized that you needed to grease the rear bearings as if they were front wheel bearings.

I'm not sure which is the weirder part of that story, the odometer reset or the fact that he claims to have been on-track to have driven more than 62,000 miles in a single year in a CyberTruck.
