My wife decided we need a new family car. She wants to replace her VW Jetta TDI with an SUV. I'd like to get something that can tow the boat, and the tractor in a pinch, about 120 miles one way. There really isn't much out there so I may just be pissing into the wind here, but aside from the looks, what is the mechanical difference between the F150 and the Expedition?

Is the lower tow rating due to additional vehicle weight? Is the motor/power the same? (I know power doesn't dictate tow capacity but I'm curious)

We are also considering the new Suburban. She wants a lot of room!

Currently, I use my old truck (my dad owns it now) to tow the tractor and implements. I would still use this the majority of the time but sometimes it's not available.

Forgot to mention, the motor for the 2015 is the 3.5L ecoboost. All the Expeditions will come with this engine.

I would do a quick look up on the Ford web site and see the weight of each. I would guess it IS because the expedition is heavier. Too bad Dodge didn't put the Eco Diesel in their SUV's as well. Sometimes HP gets de-rated from one vehicle to the next due to exhaust restrictions. The Expedition might require a quieter system than the truck.

Jeep has the Eco diesel in the Grand Cherokee. People are reporting really good mpg numbers out of them. Some over 30 mpg on the highway.

The old 5.4 Expeditions had a 9200# tow capacity and so do the new Ecoboost Expeditions. So it leads me to believe that the tow capacity is limited by the independent rear suspension. Not saying that it's a bad system, it tows like a dream and has plenty of cargo capacity. Our 07 has a gvwr of like 7800# which gives it around 1800# of cargo capacity. It has numbers very similar to the f150.

The hp and TQ numbers are the same as the f150

P.S. If she really likes lots of room, be sure to look at the EL models. That's what we have and it's fantastic, with the middle and back row folded down, you can fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the back.

Actually that's the one she likes, the EL and the Suburban. I saw somewhere that the '15 Expeditions will all come with the same 3.5l Ecoboost as the "outgoing F-150's"

I took that to mean they are updating the new 150's with newer and better engines and using the "older" 3.5l on the Expeditions. I don't know if I understood it correctly or not but I couldn't find anything saying that Ford was changing motors in the 150, so that is where my confusion lies.

The more I read about the Ex, the more I like it over the Suburban, simply for more power available. I actually like the Suburban interior more but I like the numbers on the Ex better. Since I'm primarily concerned with tow capacity and less with looks, then I'm leaning towards the Expedition. I hope she likes it as well of course.

I'm also curious if the drivetrain is different such as transmission, gearing, and all that? I will be (only on occasion) pulling close to 9k-9.5k lbs. the majority of my towing will be a 4k lb pontoon boat which is as aerodynamic as a school bus. :)

How much weight do/did you tow with your Expedition?

My sister has a 2010 Expedition EL with all the bells and whistles. It has a 5.4 and has just over 80,000 miles. It's been flawless. Most they tow is 5,000#.

It gets good mpg for what it is. It's been on many family trips to Florida, The Outer Banks, ect and will turn in 20 mpg on these runs.

A friend just got a 2015 Suburban LTZ. It is quite nice, but I was surprised it had no cd changer (only holds 1 disc). It's currently sitting at the dealer because it locked itself in four wheel drive and won't come out.
