Thanks for all the replies guys. I was hoping to find out if there were testers out there and if so if they were affordable. The main reason I was looking is so I could walk up to a trailer out back, hook the tester up and find out what I needed to know. The one tester is way out of my price range but I did find the truck side testers that will help me quickly and easily check my trucks. It wasn't about being able to do it other ways, it was about finding a quick, easy way to do it without much hassle. Wouldn't we all rather just plug the trailer into a tester and find out where the problem is instead of using helpers (human or wood) or jacking up trailers and killing a half hour? It looks like either I do it the old fashioned way or try to build a tester like Chris did.

I currently only have two trailers but I use 4 other trailers that don't belong to me. So a simple tester that I could carry in the truck would have been great as I never know where I am going to be when I have to pick a trailer up. It was all about convience:)

I will have a pic of mine for you by Friday. I am going to my storage facility and will grab it and bring it home.

By having a self contained unit like I built you can plug in the trailer and flip one of each 6 switches at a time to test all 6 functions of the trailer wiring quickly and effectively. It takes less then 1 minute to do all functions. I can stand at the rear of the trailer with the test box and run the test then unplug it and go on to the next trailer.

If using a battery and jumper wires along with a test light/meter it would take 10 minutes per trailer.

I also built a tester for the truck side that is nothing more than 6 LED's on a 20' piece of wire. Plug it in and sit in the cab with it in you lap and run the lights, brakes, headlamps, ect. Quick and easy.

That's a subjective time estimate... Some people will be faster or slower.

I have a wire pigtail rig I made up using a couple gator clips and a test lamp and a roll of e-tape.. I can test 6 and 7 pin plugs .. probably in your 'minute' estimate.

I think a rotary switch and a handfull of 12v led's might make a nice test box as well.

To each his own. I built mine for about $30 and the commercial ones are $300 and do the same thing as mine. Either way there are tons of ways to skin a KATTTT!:D

I agree. I may have 5$ in mine.. I'm sure yours witht he switches looks better than my ball of wire and wirenuts/tape. to each his own.

Hmm.. now I'm thinkin about building one using a multi position rotary switch and some of those leds i mentoned.. I'g got boxes of those things laying around here somewhere..... plus lotsa old parts to trailer plugs and sockets... hmmm...

Well here is the pics I promised. As you can see you plug it into a lighter, I use my jump box. It then will allow you to activate the brakes, turn on the tail/running lamps, turn on left or right turn signal lamp, turn on reverse lights if equipped, and the light bulb illuminates if the 12volt battery on the trailer is charged and hooked up correctly.
