A picture of that would be worth a lot (I'd like to understand what you are referring to, and don't get the 'picture'). Obviously it is quite a bit different from a standard 3pt 'A' frame on the deck that you are hooking up to.
Hope your retro work will go smoothly.

Re: Is there a \"bad\" brush cutter

I just picked up a 5' KK at TSC this weekend for around $700 incl. tax. Havent used it yet but hope to shortly. Price of steel has sure raised the price of implements lately.

Re: Is there a \"bad\" brush cutter

I have been using a Bushhog brand model 286 since 2003 and like several posters have already mentioned I also have shredded large rocks, fence posts, landscape timbers, tires and small trees. If it can't shred it the tractor usually will stall. Do have a slip clutch and still on first set a blades, do sharpen the blades several times though out the season with a hand grinder. My son also bought a squealer for his TC 25 D. Both have worked well so far.

Re: Is there a \"bad\" brush cutter

"So as that my expectations are correct, what can I expect to cut with this cutter---such as will it go as large as 3 inch pine trees AS LONG AS I GO SLOW? "

3" is pretty big... however, I have tackled material that big (stumps up to 6"tall) Just make sure you have a few spare shear bolts handy. Make sure you have front ballast or your loader is installed.

As far as the prices...considering fuel and steel
cost surcharges which were unknown a few years back, I can't say they're excessive (unfortunately).

Re: Is there a \"bad\" brush cutter

This design is bad, see photo. My model has the pins spun outwards so I have to spread the 3ph arms to get them off. The important thing to avoid is the lowest pivot and the 3ph pins with a big nut and a lynch pin.

See how the lower pins are attached so that you have to remove the 3ph stabilizers and sideways slide them on and off of the pins? The other bad thing is that when you mount your 3ph arms to a pin with support on only one side and then use your tractor to push on the attachment you induce a twist that will twist the heck out of the black part. I'll try and find what I want it to look like. The heavier duty RCs are all equipped with a mounting like a box blade which has a removable hitch pin deal and is more desirable.

If I was just mowing lawns the pictured style would last a long time. Trying to knock over small trees and such, which the RC is fully capable of digesting, makes the pictured attachment style insufficient.

Here is the gooder style. Hard to see but all the bush hog mowers seemed to have it.

Re: Is there a \"bad\" brush cutter

I bought a 4-ft KK brush hog (the yellow one, not the orange one) last June for $675 at Tractor Supply. Has the price of steel jumped that much in 10 months?

For a 4100 - I'd stick with a 4 footer and watch for a good used one. Lotsa folks trade up.

Re: Is there a \"bad\" brush cutter

Highbeam,

I don't believe the finish mower you have shown as the "bad design" was designed to be used as a "brush cutter".
Any implement that is pushed into service that it wasn't designed for might well be a "bad" choice for that task.

Re: Is there a \"bad\" brush cutter

That bad design finish mower, as you call it, is a brush hog with gauge wheels welded on by the owner. I'll agree that there are light duty hogs and there are heavy duty ones. The single design element of the lousy upper arms is a weak point in the light ones that you should avoid if you are going to be using a lighter duty hog for occasional heavier duty work.

Hey, I can break anything if I try to. I could also baby something and never break it. The poster wants to cut 3" stems and that requires backing into brush which is more than some designs can handle.
