Abbreviations used in this forum are not nearly as complicated as what kids use in text messages on their cell phones, "blackberries", and "PDA's". Check out these abbreviations:

Goodness!! That's insane! I know there are some of those abbreviations used here. But really only the absolute most common ones such as FYI (For your information) and IMHO (In my humble opinion) which can also be simply IMO. Depends on how "humble" you are I guess. Another common one is LOL (Laughing out loud). One I had to look up a while back when I saw it here was LMAO and ROTFLMAO! When I saw that I thought, WTH? Of course, none of these apply to tractors specifically but are general IM/chat room/forum acronyms.

My absolute favorite goes back to Vietnam and a message draft I got back from the Assistant G-4 ... in red pencil across the front of it was a big UNA.

??? Unacceptable? I asked ... nope, it's the abbreviation for "use no abbreviations" ...

Yeah, these two are true acronyms, invented during WW2. Anyone
watching The War, currently on PBS will get the story. They bleeped
them here on KQED, but some other parts of the US got the true
definition.

Note that true acronyms are pronounced like words (SNAFU, ROPS, CUT),
while abbreviations or initials are not (TLB, MMM, CIA).

That said, is John Deere the only official user of the initials SCV for
Secondary Control Valve?

And what about "rockshaft"? Another JD-only? I wonder how that came
to mean the 3-point.....

one tractor is and one tractor is not. What is the definition?

I have seen articulated loaders, as used at mines or dumps, but the
operators do NOT call them skiploaders. I have never seen a tracked
machine referred to as a skiploader. So far, dictionaries have come up
dry. ...and who was that guy, Skip, anyway....

It started in underground mining....
Skip - A car being hoisted from a slope or shaft.

My first exposure was working summers in the early 60s at the quarry in Marblehead, OH....and the guys there called the articulated Euclids loaders SKIP-LOADERS...even though most of them were loading the TRUCKS...



The europeans seem to have another take on the term...the bucket is called a skip and what picks up the skip....is a skip loader...

My first exposure was working summers in the early 60s at the quarry in Marblehead, OH....and the guys there called the articulated Euclids loaders SKIP-LOADERS...even though most of them were loading the TRUCKS

I was in the Ohio National Guard from 1963 to 1969 .
For 5 of those 6 years I spent 2 weeks summer camp in that area.
One week at Camp Perry near Port Clinton Ohio and 1 week bivouacked at Marblehead, Ohio.
