Is there a way to apply down pressure on a three point hitch

I would imagine it could be done with a hydrolic top link and some creative brackets

3-point hitch downforce kit
Deere add-on 3PH down pressure system.

The best kept secret about down pressure on a 3PH is that you can apply enough to get the attachment to work but not raise the tractor rear wheels off of the ground. :)
I had an Allis 720 that had down pressure via a two-way cylinder on the 3PH. It was the cat's meow when used as intended or as not intended when raising the rear to change a tire or install tire chains etc.

Weight.

If you have down pressure you lose rear traction, and the back tires would come off the ground anytime they went into the slightest dip.

True.

But that doesn't mean that it can't work. Same thing happens on an FEL*...

* I know - there's a lot more tractive force potentially given up on the rear tires, but the principle is the same. And if you're talking 2WD it's even more important...

True, you could have a pressure relief, that only work on down pressure, set to some percentage of the tractors rear axle weight so that the back tires only "lighten" so much.

.....or just add weight to the blade and play with the top link to adjust the angle of attack.
(i.e. use the "KISS" principle...)

Not to change the subject, but how do you put the 3-pt in float mode (if possible). I mean like if you were using a rear blade to plow snow so that the blade would always follow the contour of the road (like a conventional snow blade with chain lift) and not scalp when going over a hump or raise up slightly when front wheels drop into a dip. I have draft control but never have really used it. Seems like I remember one time when I mistakenly had the draft control all the way up, the 3pt. didn't drop or go up, I forget which??

I have a lock that rides in the channel with the up down lever, when I drop my blade I lock it in the down position and it rides with the contours of the ground.

Nothing's going to stop a 3pt implement from rising up, only weight. So if you lower the implement all the way, it's going to rise and fall like float. If you have position control set for, say, halfway down, then it's gonna float between halfway down and full up, but will never float down past half down. Make sense?

Now if you have a hydraulic top link, an implement is still gonna float up depending on how far you extend the cylinder. All a hydraulic top link is is an adjustable solid top link. Yes, you can extend it to the point that the 3pt arms won't come up if its long enough, but as long as there's play in the 3pt arms at the bottom, the implement can come up.

You can not make a machine into something that it is not . If you try a loader mounted , hydraulic driven post hole digger . You will wonder why you ever fooled around with anything else .
