John Deere 5065e, 2013
My tractor is a Tier 2 machine. My hour meter is the mechanical wheel type, NOT and LCD display. I had a dealer Tech make a reference to a possible software update for my Tier 2 (build date 12-4-2012) 5065E. I am not a as well versed as many of you guys by a long shot. Please tell me there is NOT an ECU on my tractor? But if there is, where is it located? And are they reliable? I would assume if an ECU exists, it must be addressable via a multi-pin connector like the OBD II system on a car. Thanks in advance.

In order to accurately answer your question if you provided your tractors serial# & trans type it would help tremendously. I checked both parts catalogs for 5065E N American edition for manual operated speed-hour meter & didn't locate one.

On the older 2.9L engines the mechanical speed hr meters were powered from the rear of camshaft via a hole in flywheel housing. I'm not locating that feature in any 5065E parts catalog. Maybe some one else will chime in.

TxJim, my tractor has the speed sensor on a housing on left side of engine just ahead of fuel pump. It’s about the diameter of a spark plug and has an electrical connector (2 wire) that inputs to the tachometer on instrument panel. When I unplugged it, the tach went to zero. I’m guessing the sensor is monitoring engine rotation there? The flywheel is on other end of engine under driver seat (starter motor there). My question about an ECU is just, does my engine have one? A technician commented I might need a software update? I didn’t think this vintage (Tier 2 , 2013) had an ECU? Do you know what is rotating at that engine location, that drives the tachometer signal? I put a voltmeter on the sensor , with electrical connector unplugged , and I’m reading 6.5 VAC at idle. I figured that means the sensor is good. But I was expecting a 0-5 VAC signal. I’m guessing the sensor has a magnet inside and creates the AC output as the magnetic if field is interrupted when a gear rotates past the sensor?

Sorry my old brain thought when you stated mechanical wheel type, NOT and LCD display that your speed hr meter was cable driven similar to older JD utility tractors. Sensor picks up signal from timing gear(item 3). Does your tractor have tilt or fixed steering wheel?
