You're correct, and I do apologize.

Very easy to read some other sarcastic comments made in reference (sp?) on this thread to items being stolen and homeowner being held accountable and I directed that back at you.

I was wrong.

I hold firearms to a "higher standard" than anything else in my posession (sp?) only for the fact that they are the most lethal items I own (as well as other things I realize that anyone could use as a weapon).

Rob, I also apologize in the fact that in my first response, it may of sounded "cold" towards your situation, that was not my intention.

I sincerely hope that my wife and I never have to go through what you and your wife and are going through right now.

I'm sorry to hear about your break-in. When I was burglarized 10+ years ago, it was a sharp awakening to the vulnerability of my home and possessions.

I got blasted once before on this site when I expressed my opinions regarding gun ownership and safes.

I still stand by my opinion, that if you own guns, you need to consider the security of the guns when they're not in use. I agree with Sigarms, that I hold the safety and security of my guns to a higher standard. There's just too much potential for "bad" when they're in the wrong hands. This is MY opinion.

I bought a long gun safe from Sams Club for $800 bucks. They've come down in cost and now run about $650. It's great for storing guns, as well as other valuables and paperwork. I can put all of my expensive hunting rifles and shotguns in there, the guns that are of no use for home defense. I can't imagine not owning it, it's been great for my piece-of-mind.

I also use a small handgun safe for my personal defense weapon. Again, this is MY choice. I have small kids in the house and feel better about securing my pistol this way. It also helps secure the gun, in case my house is broken into while I'm away. The last thing I want is for my wife to walk into the house and surprise a burglar, who's standing there with MY pistol that he pulled out of the nightstand. One of the things that I didn't expect with the handgun safe, is that for me, the gun is actually quicker to get to. The safe is mounted where it's closer and more discrete to open (rather then propping myself up to open the night stand drawer) and the grip of the gun is in the exact location and orientation I expect it when I reach in the safe.

Rob - Sorry to hear about your experience and loss. A gun safe may provide some protection to you, however, maybe you should first focus on security measures that will give your wife back her comfort level, as I imagine she must be very upset to have been the one to discover this. Thank goodness she did not arrive at home when the thiefs were there.

Focusing on what you have rather than your losses will help you through this.

A good security system for your whole house may be the best overall solution.

I have a gun safe to protect my kids and their friends from their friends, as I have no idea if their friends know how to handle guns or not - I have to assume they don't.

I can replace any material posession I have. I could never replace my wife or children. I pray every night for their protection. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thank you, Joe. I realize this subject evokes deep and strong feelings. All the more reason to keep it on a non-personal level. The "anti" folks start winning when the rest of us divide the camp.

FWIW, I take great pains to put my firearms up whenever non-immediate family is going to be in the house. Otherwise, in my opinion, I can never have one too close or too available. They do me no good if I can't get them just when I think I WON'T need them. I have been robbed at gunpoint while out of town 27 years ago...mine was sitting in my room. I can still review every detail of that 45-60 second encounter. Several opportunities to have drawn it, but I wouldn't have unless his thumb moved (he was holding a colt model 1911 with the hammer down). Even without mine, I decided instantly that if he moved his thumb toward the hammer, I was going for the gun. He was content to rob the four of us.

I have been burglarized three times. I unwittingly interrupted the third one (yes, I was armed when I entered my house), and one perp went out a rear window without opening it. Two perps were caught later. The feeling of violation is enormous. My wife was never again comfortable in that house. I was off the wall for a while with anger and a feeling of being at the perps mercy (they could come whenever they chose, but we had to go to work). Awful feeling. Didn't really get better when they were caught. To me it is as much a crime against person as against property.

Rob, I think these posts will show you there is a fairly consistent feeling victims of burglaries have, and it's not just anger. Takes some time just for the edge to wear off. I suspect the police have told you this, but seconds are not uncommon by the same perps at the same place. Usually after a few weeks so you have time to replace the stolen items with nice new stuff.
