I just wonder if open carry would help cut down on crime? Seems to me if methhead bob walked into a pharmacy to commit a crime and saw a bunch of gun totters, he'd have 2nd thoughts?

That did happen a couple of years ago down south, several hoodlums cased a Waffle House (?!?) and saw some open carriers eating. They decided to wait, and were picked up by the police while waiting.

Most thugs are looking for easy victims and will avoid those who can defend themselves. I know the controvery about "keeping it concealed" but I also believe that open carry could discourage thugs in the first place. There are no single answers.

Georgia is open carry and it can be a bit unnerving to see the guy in camo with his 45 at Walmart.

Our first experience like that was seeing a guy open carrying at the local Dairy Queen. At first it bothered me a bit, but then I realized that it was perfectly legal and I thought it was a good idea. A couple of years later, my wife and I both got our CCW licenses.

Criminals are not going to walk around open carrying. It's not the law abiding citizens that we need to worry about.

South Dakota is open carry and a "must issue" CCP if criminal background check is clean.

The subject of going armed came up at the dinner table a few days ago. This is what I have found, interpreted from research so far. If anyone in TN knows different please post.
TN requires "License to Carry" with no differentiation from Open to Concealed. If you have LTC you can keep rifle or shotgun in vehicle with magazine loaded, provided no round in the chamber. LTC requires CW training even if you want to "open carry". It is a "must issue" state for both purchase and LTC if pass backgruond check is clean. They say no registration required but the make, model, & s/n are required for background check during purchase, so Bureau of Criminal Aprehension has your weapon info. unless it was purchased before background checks were required. Weapon make, model, & s/n is not reqired for the LTC, only purchase.

Idaho here is an open carry state....but that wont prevent somebody from reporting to the cops that thru saw an armed man/woman down by the store....bla bla. next thing you know your up against the wall....it has happened to a few friends of mine. getting a concealed carry permit was very easy...but a bit time consuming.

I think this is do to the fact, the majority don't realize that it is within the law to open carry.

Well, I agree to a point. But the law-abiding idiot that now thinks he is on a mission from God to protect the world can be just as dangerous as criminals. I question the emotional stability of someone who wants to show the world "I got a gun." LEO's see these folks in the form of some of the volunteer officers, and those are the folks you DON"T want carrying guns.

If you are smart, you keep it concealed, IMHO.

Thanks for calling me stupid.

I don't open carry very often but I think your attitude that people who open carry think they are on a mission from God or are emotionally unstable is totally mistaken. Are you ashamed of having a firearm? Do you feel you should carry but you are embarrassed for anyone to know? Why do you jump to conclusions that anyone open carrying is an idiot?

Yes, we are our own worst enemy. We don't want to publicly admit what we believe.

As it is now, the only guns most people see are those used by criminals and shown dramatically on "News at 11". Maybe if the general public saw more honest, law abiding people carrying guns, we would not so many restrictions.

Now I'll admit that I rarely open carry because I don't want stores to suddenly start posting "no guns" signs. But if I'm not going into stores, I see no reason to feel that I have to cover up. Mostly I open carry when I'm horseback riding and figure the gun is going to be exposed anyway.

That, and the fact that a number of Cailfornians are moving to states such as Idaho, Montana and others. You know those folks have been indoctrinated by the lefties in CA for years. Hopefully, they'll realize they're now in a free state!!

We have the same problem in PA. Folks from the socialist state of Maryland moving in...see a Pennsylvanian exercising his/her rights and get all upset and do call the LEOs.

I bet half of us "law abiding idiots" are a better shot than most of the LEO's.

I'm not on any kind of mission from anyone, especially God. I am emotionally stable, and don't carry to show off to anyone.

The problem is, they're not staying in CA. I edited the post you quoted for clarification.

As was stated, Washington is open carry. Furthermore, Washington is concealed carry with no permit, if one is

(8) Any person engaging in a lawful outdoor recreational activity such as hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, or horseback riding, only if, considering all of the attendant circumstances, including but not limited to whether the person has a valid hunting or fishing license, it is reasonable to conclude that the person is participating in lawful outdoor activities or is traveling to or from a legitimate outdoor recreation area;

RCW 9.14.060
It becomes a matter of debate wether this allows concealed carry in a vehicle while traveling to go, say, hiking. Common sense say keep the gun empty while in a car. Get a CCP if you want protection while in a vehicle

BTW, just to lighten up the thread a bit, my wife and I recently noticed a sign on a doctor's building:
"No concealed firearms"

I was wondering if I should have open carried and how well that would have went over?

some stores and banks here in Idaho have signs stating no firearms in store/bank. We cant conceal carry in those places EVEN if we have the permit. Cant open carry there also.

Also good to note that here in Idaho, any knife over 6" (blade length) carried out of site or concealed in car is considered a concealed weapon. Having the permit has not caused me any problems. I had to get the Utah license also to encompass neighboring states that didn't recognize the Idaho license.

Overall it was not much problem to get them.
