Many years ago my company did custom software projects for businesses. I evaluated the order processing procedures at a lumber mill at the request of the mill owner. It took two people two hours to process a typical order. Lots and lots of steps involved. It kept both people completely busy for two hours.
I told the business owner we could automate their process. Once completed, it would then provide the benefit of being able to process an order in about five minutes. Instead of two people for two hours, one person had to enter the data, then press ENTER, and then wait for the computer and software to produce the result. I warned the business owner that the employees would love the system at first, but over time would grow to complain it was too slow. I had learned before that two people can work hard for two hours and feel productive. But one person sitting there alone, looking at a computer monitor flashing "Please Wait" for five minutes, seems like an eternity.
It was six months later, when the business owner called. He said: "They were just in here complaining how slow the computer is!"
