Tom, that is what we have also, running on 6 years right now for the set. Last summer I thought I had to replace the board in the washer, cost just under $100, then found out it was a blown fuse, I had to specialty order them, 10 pack at $11.

I have a brand name elliptical machine that crapped out weeks after warranty expired. It's an issue with the control console. I can pay a technician by the hour to fix it, but company recommends replacing the console---$540. That ain't gonna happen.

It was an old TV that was setting around for some forgotten reason.

I just bought a flat screen. What does one do with a perfectly good old type TV? Free cycle? Would anyone bother to pick it up?

The best way to just get rid of something like that is to put a masking tape price tag of $10 on it like it came from a garage sale. Leave it in the back of the pickup at Walmart and it will be gone when you get back out. For things that you can't give away, people will steal if they think it has value to you.

Goodwill takes them as far as I know. Also there are free drop off places in larger cities that recycle the materials.

In Australia, you would be able to argue with the supplier to have it repaired under warranty. The warranty period is irrelevant if the device fails at well under the expected lifespan. EG, your fridge should last 10 years at least, if it fails at 5 years, it is not "of merchantable quality" and you are entitled to repair.

Many people are not aware of this and saves the manufacturer a lot. Here the supplier is the one that sold you the equipment and is therefore liable to repair it. If the supplier goes out of business then the manufacturer is liable.

Your consumer laws may be similar. Contact your consumer protection authority.

Nice law. Makes sense.

Oh how I wish that were true in this case. I think I am a good consumer and made my appeal to the manufacturer and they are adament that the warranty period is sufficient to stand by their product. I also reviewed several blogs where there are many unhappy customers that have fought the good fight and got no satisfaction-- other than to vent pubicly about their disatisfaction.

You guys in Australia are squared away. I have said it before, but American companies are real good at making products that just do not hold up. I now write a personal letter to a company's CEO when I have a product that fails too soon. Sometimes I get a reply, sometimes not.

In my letters, I do tell the CEOs that for now at least, I will stick with products made in Japan and Germany.

It is the replacement parts that they are after. They can design as good as anyone, they just don't want to. All and all, I think American made is just as good as anything.
