She is fast! I'd like to see a side by side comparison in a 40-hour work week with dual shield. I always liked the look of dual shield.

Spray transfer bead is so smooth and uniform. I imagine a lot of robotic systems use it which may explain why some products have such perfect welds.

I've never tried dual shield but wouldn't that leave slag?

Oh yeah it leaves a real heavy slag! But I always thought dual shield was very fast. I'd have to go and compare the deposit rates between spray, and dual shield, I'm sure spray will have a higher rate. But where I was going with the side by side comparison is all the extra prep work that spray requires. As we all know, there is more to welding that just pulling the trigger!;)

Here is a picture of the slag, and a chipped weld.

Yes, prep time would be an issue especially with painted or rusty metal. For some reason I just don't think of spray transfer as something that would be done in the field or outside a well equipped shop. I don't see it being used on rusty old metal but rather on new fabrication with steel that just needs scale removed. I haven't ever used dual shield but cannot quite see that as a technique to use in the field either given the gas requirement. That said, your picture of the dual shield weldment looks very nice....but not as nice as what even I could do with spray transfer! Spray transfer is so pretty and smooth. Looks like beautifully applied caulking. I may be overly impressed with the finish look as most of my welds are still on the bird poop side of the spectrum.

I was the project superintendent on this outfall project. We had a crew of welders welding these 10-feet diameter 1-inch wall pipe with dual shield. 100% X-ray. Had to have the welders in a tent because of the gas coverage.

I've never had any issue with my ESAB spray arcing and it's only 280 amps or so max. Not sure what max voltage out is. I use c-18. I'm pretty sure the Miller will do it, if the Everlast MTS 250S will.

And there you have it, proof is in the pudding. Some cool projects you have been on bud!

Yeah lots of projects. If I would have known about this Internet thing, I would have taken more pictures.

I know bud, I never took pics of anything and never even liked computers. Wasnt my thing till I joined TBN, then it opened me up to some great people and some reliable info! And some bung holes, which also help as a tension release for me, so even they serve a purpose! LOL!

I love not only the look but the sound of Spray Welding! It sounds like you are TIG welding.
My Miller MM210 will just barely do Spray Welding using Stargon gas. It really does super heat the cone and tip though.

Awesome. I'm thinking seriously of getting a 252 also. I've got a number of projects that I want to attempt, the old HTP Mig 160 has crapped out - and the small TIG I have (Miller EconoTig) -just won't do really thick stuff.

I'm hoping to get one in the next month or two if all goes well.
