From a wife to a wife, its great that you want to get him an quality implement that he has wanted for a long time. Through the years I have wanted to do the same for my husband, but to make sure the right item was purchased, he was presented with a card that stated my intent, and a message of "love and lets go shopping" , you must be prepared to drag around with him, and admire all that he looks at, be his sounding board, and assure him that the price is not an impediment. Both of you will be very happy. Men don't require the gift to be in their hand, they are happier picking the item, yet giving you the credit for their new found toy. It works every time.
All the best

I just asked my DW what she thought and she said it sounds like you know enough about the brush hogs and your husband to buy one, so you should go for it.
good luck and have fun.

Well, it's probably too late, but my SWMBO and I have a general rule that if it's expensive the designated beneficiary gets a lot of say in the actual final pick. You never know when a mind will change.
I was about to buy her a Prius to travel the car pool lanes and she decided at the last hour that she would rather have a Civic Hybrid.

I read alot. Some times two or three books a week. I like certain authors and my wife knows who some of them are. Occassionally she will bring me a book by one of my favorite authors. Yes, most of the time I already have the book or it's by another author I don't care much for.
Anyway, buy the one you pick and ask the seller if you can exchange it for a different one if your husband prefers a different one. Stay with a heavy one and a good brand. Landpride and woods and bush hog are decent brands.

I'm stubborn and, while I would normally agree withe folks who recommend letting him buy it, I prefer to do my own research and buy it so he is surprised... (I did this for his b-day with a gun a while back and won him the best-wife award at work :))

Surprise is overrated. Satisfaction is the goal. Buying the wrong one precludes getting the right one for years, perhaps forever. He will be surprised in any case, the only variable is what is the cause of his surprise.

A buddy was surprised to see his wife mowing the woods and grinding stumps and rocks with his new riding mower. Surprise is overated, good or bad. It is fleeting and temporary....although I did hear about the bent mower blades for a few weeks.

I had a BX2350 MMM for a short while. My wife surprised me one day by mowing for me. I looked down to see her going thru the ditch back and forth from the street to our property. She wouldn't look up to see me frantically waving. When she finally came up toward me I asked her what she was doing. She said "mowing". I told her she shouldn't be mowing the ditch and her reply was "But it was doing it OK". While I'm talking to her my neighbor who also has a BX was rapidly going toward the remaining section of my ditchline with his weedeater to get the rest of the weeds before she could get back.:D
I love her and she never complains about my Kubota purchases.:) Maybe I hurry and purchase what I want befor she gets a chance to do it for me.;)

I'm not too familiar with brush hogs so I'm going to ask a question that I think you'll want answered. Do all the nicer models come with slip clutches or is it an option on pretty much every brand? I think I would want a slip clutch vs a pin that I would have to replace each time it breaks. What do other think about slip clutches, I have read where they can rust and not work correctly?

I think buying him a bush hog is a FANTASTIC idea!!!!!!

Go for the six foot cutter. Not only will he cut more with it in less time, it will cut outside the width of his wheels on both sides, which is really nice if you are doing trails or trying to get closer to a fence, tree or building.

Kubota and LandPride are in a partnership, so it's real nice to be able to get parts for them at the same place. Like everything, it will break or wear out, so support is always your number one concern when buying.

I'm also a big fan on LandPride and highly recomened them. Like mentioned earlier, there are other good brands out there, but none that is better. Just as good, yes.

Buy him the LandPride and you wont go wrong. Have it there at the house for him all wraped up and he'll never forget you for what you've done. Truly a gift to remember!!!!!!

As for medium duty or heavy duty, ask yourself what he will be cuttting and how often? If it's grass, medium duty is plenty. Heavy duty is for sapplings, junk and commercial use. Heavy duty is better, but probably over kill.

Go for the slip clutch if you can afford it. I have a sheer pin in my bush hog and can go months without breaking one, and break four in a single day. They are simple and easy to change, but still a pain to have to deal with it. I have a slip clutch on my finish mower and LOVE IT!!!!!!!! One day, I'll buy a slip clutch for my bush hog.

Congratulations,
Eddie

I have spent more time than I care to replacing pins, so I have slip clutches on four of our cutters. They do require checking occasionally, but I usually only do so in the spring.
