If we invade Iraq, are we fighting for our freedom?

While I'm undecided on invading Iraq because I'm not privy to all the information the president is, I don't think we would be directly fighting for our freedom. I think we would be saying we will come to less harm by taking him on NOW than waiting for him to consolidate his position and/or develop nukes. WW 2 lasted as long as it did BECAUSE ****** was unchallenged initially and premitted to grow in strength. There are too many parrallels now with Hussein (spitting sound). It's a little disconcerting that people today are spouting the same talk that people did 60 odd years ago when they didn't want to get into WW 2. I don't know if we should go into Iraq but then that's not MY decision. We don't have a DIRECT democracy we're I get to vote directly on every issue. We elected the people who should make the decisions that are in our best interest. You either give them that authority or you don't but you can't hold them responsible for the consequences without giving them the authority to take the action they feel is most appropriate. When I'm privy to all the information the president has THEN I'll make an informed decision. Until then I have to let him make it. If he makes bad ones I get to voice my opinion at election time. It's not a great system but I haven't seen a better one yet.......

Re: I\'ve found where the heroes have gone

the US will no doubt want to build a coalition of nations before they want to invade Irak, just like they did the first time,it sort of legitimizes the whole process and gives it a semblance of democracy. some of the great western democracy will sign up just to keep being pal with the big guy (i.e. canada u.k.) while others are more independant thinkers(i.e. france, germany, russia). I think they are the ones to watch.

Re: I\'ve found where the heroes have gone

Gerard,

We pretty much agree on this, except perhaps for how many of our elected officials should be required to make the decision about how to commit large numbers of our military personnel to combat. I concede the necessity for the president to have some discretion for using the military in limited operations. I think the congress should be required to agree before anything like Desert Storm is entered into. To put it in perspective, can you think of another recent occupant of the White House whom you would not like to have deciding where and when to send your son to battle? Checks and balances. Does the president have information that would convince the majority of congress that we should invade Iraq? If he does, he should let them in on it.
