How about a great Pyrenees ... since I got mine and she lives right in the chicken yard ... I have not lost a chicken.

Great solution to coyotes too.

Re: I've gotta kill that @#$% Fox!!!

speaking of all this.. I noticed while on my daily walk a few days ago that a neighbor had called a trapper out to his property and they were setting up live traps. Iw as wondering what was bugging him. in our area we have an occasional coyote, some fox, and plenty of raccoons and possum.. probably more raccoons than anything, unfortunately.

so 2 days later I'm doing my walk again.. this time at midnight ( yeah.. I walk after work.. I got 2 jobs and sometimes work a late shift.. so that puts my daily walk at midnight sometimes.. :) ) anyway.. I'm walking.. I always have a large walking stick ( staff ), and carry a led flashlight to use as needed. there are street lights sporadically in our area.. perhaps one ever 100yds 'or so' in any event.. I was walking down a cul-de-sac.. next one up from the neighbor that had the trapper out, and i saw a raccoon scoot across the road about 20yds in front of me in the dim glow of a distant street lamp.. not the first time I've encountered wildlife.. no biggie.. I stop to give them leway and make a lil noise so they know I'm there... 99.9999% of the time no story to tell.. Anyway.. It moves out of sit eoff the road, so I keep walking.. then poof.. about 10yds in front of me it scoots back across the road and stops in the middle in front of me :) I bang my stick down and turn on the light... so it starts loping towards me.. :)

I think to myself.. ?really?.. in any event.. I had lots of options... I chose 'flee'... even though I have an old cartilidge injury from a few years ago, I can still manage some 'get up and go' when needed.. did the 100yd dash thing and looked back and had lost it... :)

twas at night, and it looked healthy, so it probably wasnt a disease issue.. might have had some 'kids' nearby perhaps... I've seen raccoon trains crossing the road before..

i always have my carry gun with me but would not have used it except as last resort and being attacked where i couldn't escape.. etc... :)

anywho.. got a lil more exercise that night.. :)

Racoon running towards human is usually one of two things.

1. Rabid.
2. Used to people feeding it.

Glad to hear you can still flee when needed!

yep.. figured it was some issue.. just didn't know what. had it come to rock and hard spot I'd have shot it before it got to me.. but.... :)

Re: I've gotta kill that @#$% Fox!!!

Thursday a large Fox snatched a leghorn right in front of my oldest daughter, 30' from treeline in our side yard at about 1pm. Today while we were at a lunch at Church, it seems to have snagged my duaghters FAVORITE chicken {they trained her to answer to her names and jump for peanuts) right in the center of the back yard. It also seems that two red hens have vanished in same period.

Dang!

Real sorry to hear you lost the chickens. The chickens are pets to the wife and the youngest. The youngest has a favorite she carries into the house...

If she lost that chicken she would be very upset.

May I suggest a Chicken Tank? :D:D:D:D:D:D

I think I mentioned in the Chicken Tank thread about foxes. In case I did not, here it goes. :licking:

For years we had a family of foxes living in front of us. Our drive way runs east/west and the den was to the east. The driveway ends but a trail continues west until it hits our property line that runs north/south. The property line is cleared and it and the driveway made a perfect fox/coyote highway. :D

I started finding piles of white feathers and broken eggs. The foxes where raiding a chicken house somewhere to our south west. One Sunday morning I was cooking breakfast and I saw a fox heading west. I told the family that there goes the fox looking for HIS breakfast. :D It was not long before I saw the fox heading east bound for the den with a white Leghorn chicken. I told the family that the fox was heading down the driveway with a chicken. The fox heard me and dropped the chicken. The kids wanted to see the dead chicken so out we went.

We were not in the house more then 5-10 minutes and the chicken disappeared. :D

Eventually the people keeping chickens cooped up the birds or the fox ate them all because I stopped seeing eggs, white feathers and dead birds. :D

Later,
Dan

Last wild animal that ran toward me I killed by braining it with my hoe.

Critters, you do NOT want to f with me!

I am a killer. I am a predator. I am an omnivore.
And I'm **** proud of it. :licking:
