Re: I've gotta kill that @#$% Fox!!!

David I can testify that a load of #2 shot even at 35 yards will do fine from a Modified choke on Mr. fox, and with a full choke, depending on how she patterns you might be able to stretch that to 40 45 yard. #4 might work but I would rather have the #2 or even BB size shot. It folds them up pretty quick and not real dangerous to nearby things/personell. But if you have the clearance, then by all means the .223/5.56mm Good Luck.

James,

From my 3/4 wrap around porch to the far side of the pond is just over 109 yds, so it is about 90+ yds to the near side edge of the pond at closest. I shot my rooster a couple weeks ago from about 40-45 yds with #4 shot and dropped him, but I was standing in the middle of the back yard. one tree line is about 100+ yds from cover, the other (from the same cover) is only 50 yds.

In the front yard, it is probably another 100 yds to the bottom of the hill on the driveway.

There are NO HOUSES visible. There is one place we can see a few lights from during the winter.

I've got the space. The AR is effing awesome BTW... This buddy of mine builds amazing weapons...

Greentop! If they don't have it, you don't need it!

I know where that is. I've used the Harley guy up the street a couple times.

I need to stop in down there and check them out...

Thanks for the good word!

Re: I've gotta kill that @#$% Fox!!!

if the fox is coming in during daylight it is probably a female with kits. You may want to look around your property for an old ground hog hole with bones and feathers around it. Then a little bit of gas and cover the hole and not only are they dead but buried.

The most effective things are a dog, and a good fence. I had one raiding me, I shot at it 4 different times, never seemed to hit it. Then my female boxer chased it to the fence, missing it by a foot. My theory is that to a fox, a bullet is pretty abstract, it really doesn't understand it. My boxer girl is the jaws of death to the little red haired bstard!! Instinct tells ms fox to stay away. Since my girl chased the fox, no fox problems. I agree that it is probably a female with kits. It's that time of year, they are more agressive now.

I thought the kits were born in the fall. I thought spring was mating season...

I DO think it is last years kits have decided NOT to move away nd now there are more foxes...

Not a fox expert though...

Re: I've gotta kill that @#$% Fox!!!

Moss, Foxes like the smell of canned catfood...Plus the 12 guage and a high brass turkey load and it is all one shot??No .223 lead flying, but i forgot you don't have close neighbors so the AR will be more fun.. Might as well enjoy something from losing the Pet chickens. Good thing you don' t have the Ducks laying yet?

I have 2 different 20 gauge. a scoped Mossberg slug gun for deer and a open sight ithaca beater gun (very reliable).

I can borrow a 12 gauge though.

Yes, all 3 female ducks are laying and have been for a month. Wonderful & yummy eggs.

Optronics - OPTRONICS VARMINT RIFLE LIGHT KIT GL50M4
This thing works great! I've had mine for 15 years and not a problem. Still uses the same bulb.
With a squealer (mouth) call you should be able to get him closer than 100 yards.
I have had success with a squirrel whistle..... to get him in real close.

Re: I've gotta kill that @#$% Fox!!!

We use them with all our stuff. Not much to train one. just get a young one and raise it with what ever you want protected!

Ed,

I need something faster than that... Long term it sounds great....

Re: I've gotta kill that @#$% Fox!!!

I have a DEN at the far back corner of my property. sure makes woodchuck disposal quick and easy... :D SO they are not ALL bad. last spring the KITS were out running & playing and having a good ole time with the dead woodchuck I dropped off to them ;)

The Chip monk problem has all but gone away, but so have the wild turkey that used to be a lot of them around. The rabbits also love to eat more of our garden in the past. not so much last 2 years ;) We dont have any chickens to worry about though.

Last year we had a small highly maneuverable hawk of some type on the property, it is back this year and has a next in the creek bed trees. The Red tails also are back on the other side of the property. Hoot owls out in the evenings really makes some noise and all & all I'm OK with all of the critters on the property I pay taxes on.

I need to do more looking for the type of hawk it is but about the size of a young crow maybe a bit smaller. VERY cool watching it fly through the trees along the creek bottom. It appears to be very curious about me working down there & flys along following me looking for chip monks that I scare away as I'm walking/working. even carrying a gun it perches up and keeps an eye right on me. have not seen any pairs just a single...

Re: I've gotta kill that @#$% Fox!!!

Sounds like you are pretty well fixed up with the AR-15.

Hey my canopy arrived this evening, the sales guy brought it, and He and I and his wife put it on... It was a pain to get on, It is steel and kinda heavy, but it is on and it looks good, I would have taken pix but it was too dark by the time we got done. I went a played a little in the gravel pile after we got done, This Kioti is a really cool tractor, I can do so much in 2WD, it is so much heavier (1066 lbs) than the Kubota I traded in, and the tires are bigger, (and hold more fluid:thumbsup:) so I have a lot more traction, and 4WD just powers thru the pile. The torque is so much better than the 2 horsepower would indicate. I am really pleased with this thing. My only regret is why did I not find one of these 2 years ago. It was only a few hundred more than the Kubota, and it is a whole size bigger, and in a much different higher class of features and trim.
We will see how it holds up long term, and I never had anything break on my 2 Kubota's but the first few days, of use, I am liking this thing.

Look like this?
Hawks can be really hard to identify. The have different stages of maturity and change with the seasons.

Sharp-shinned Hawk - South Dakota Birds

These are more common, I see fairly frequently here. They are proficient at catching and eating doves, really make short work of it too.
