I went to the local dealer yesterday, and from what I can tell, the earlier tractors had tapered roller bearings where a large nut was used to preload them and hold the assembly together. This also required a hydraulic press to take them apart. According to the stamp on the dipstick pad, mine has ball bearings and the assembly is held together with a snap ring. The repair manual only mentions a press for the tapered roller type, and not for the ball bearing type.
