I went to the local dealer yesterday, and from what I can tell, the earlier tractors had tapered roller bearings where a large nut was used to preload them and hold the assembly together. This also required a hydraulic press to take them apart. According to the stamp on the dipstick pad, mine has ball bearings and the assembly is held together with a snap ring. The repair manual only mentions a press for the tapered roller type, and not for the ball bearing type.

I had the same problem with my JD 4400, 2000.

I took it apart and replaced the seal and it still leaked. There is a steel plug like a freeze plug in the motor. It is under the casting where you found the 4 bolts.

I had a branch push it out and lost the oil. Replaced it and no more problems. It took 3 tries and some gasket seal to get it in the right place. I used the same glue to re mate the housing between the 4 bolts and the gear shaft housing.
