Javelina attack

I was working on our road this morning with the tractor, removing big rocks so my neighbor can grade it with more ease. I didn't hear or see anything, but I soon saw my Rotty limping out of the woods. I saw a little blood and thought maybe cactus, but after I washed her off, I saw two holes in her right rear leg. I can only surmise it is from javelina tusks. Her left rear leg also had a tear and she was bleeding from the rear also.
My wife took my truck back to Phoenix to go to work for a few days, as I decided at the last minute that I was going to spend the week here. So I couldn't take her to a vet - 80 miles is a long way on a tractor.

I called my nephew, who is a vet in Phoenix, and he said it wouldn't make that much sense to go to an emergency vet after 6 to 7 hours had elapsed. I did FaceTime with him and he was able to see the damage. He said ride it out and he would send some anti-biopics with my wife on Friday.
I pray she pulls through. I bet she has some respect for javelina now.

It just occurred to me that it might have been a deer or an elk? She would have probably chased almost anything.

My wife seen her first one 2 years ago from about 20 feet away while on vacation. It didn't take her long to get back into the house!

I would 2nd the coyote attack. The rear attack is classic way of bringing down larger animals. A few coyote's will run down a kill a much larger dog.

Sorry to hear of the troubles - no fun at all.

I'm sure you are already on this and your nephew mentioned it, but make sure the wounds are kept clean and you can use any antibiotic ointment or cream you can find - that'll help. Glad Friday isn't too far away....

You may want to ask your nephew about pain med recommendations. Perhaps aspirin (not Aceteminophen) would help.

We have 4 greyhounds and with their thin skin, they are injured simply doing the dumbest things. Hope she heals up quick.

Pretty sure it wasn't coyote as they are big puncture wounds, not bites.

About 3 inches, center to center, and they are both round and about the size of a quarter.

I'm no expert, maybe they are coyote. We have plenty of both around here (coyote and javelina).

Three inches is way too big for coyote. Javelina or cougar.

Thanks. I always carry my Glock 30 when I'm up here, but with the tractor noise I just didn't hear a thing. I'm a little bummed with myself for not hearing her. I'm sure she yelped.

The week long stay was a last minute decision on Sunday. I didn't anticipate needing to go anywhere so I let my wife take my pickup back to Phoenix until Friday. I need to get another old pickup that we can just leave up here for such emergencies I guess.
