JB Weld????

   / JB Weld???? #11
Ken, JB Weld is a packaged 2 part system of chemical paste that when mixed in equal parts has the consistency of very thick tooth paste. Given a short amount of time - depending on ambient temp....or applied heat (like hair dryer) cures fairly fast, strong and very hard.

I have applied it to machine parts and actually turned them in a lathe. It is in at least two of my tool boxes, both car and truck, at home in the kitchen drawer.

The most amazed if have ever been is when I applied it to a broken ear on a transfer case when we were at Pismo Beach during the sand drags. Snaped the ear off when we were unloading it from the trailer. During those days (on a Saturday) Not likely to find anyone around with a welder.

i'm glad to see that it works great for some ppl.

mainly, i see that cleanlyness is very important.

running a machine shop, we see tons of stuff come in with jb weld on them, that have failed miserably, or have since broken. most of the time, the jb prevents us from being able to fix the part, or at the very least, doubles the price of the repair.
please keep this in mind if you may need to actually repair the item down the road.

If used to patch holes and for repairs with low strength requirements, it's great. The most common mistakes in using JBWeld are (as you say) cleanliness, and trying to accelerate the cure with heat. You can accelerate the cure just fine up to about 120F, but if it gets much warmer than that, it makes a spongy, weak goo. In fact the slower it cures (within reason), the better.

It's saved my bacon on many occasions. Great stuff!

I prefer top think of the strength of jb weld as that of plastic.

It is sandable, fileable, and drillable.. and I've tapped it for non load bearing situations.

Usually when i fix something with jbweld.. I also add a small piece of metal strapping as a stiffener in the mix.

The JB-weld 'water-weld' epoxy stick also works great.. water/oil/gas resistant.

I used it directly on an auto exhaust manifold where some EGR tube snapped off. Cleaned the area as best I could, smeared some JB on it, it worked far greater than I had thought it would! Aobut 8 years ago! I'm a believer!

Have you guys ever seen or used "PC-7"? I am not sure about heat but when mixed right it is a lot stronger than JB

Never heard of "PC-7". Where do you get that? By the way...about that JB Weld....my son mixed up a large batch of that (maybe 3/4 cup's worth) and set it into a cavity that needed 'filling' to bring it back to normal surface. He then warmed it up a bit and that JB just settled in as smooth as if it was machined!

About a year back I put a small bit of JB Weld on the backside of two quarters and stuck them to one of the tables in our shipping area. You know it's funny, many folks here have tried to pick up the change but no one has yet been successful. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
