JD 1140
A helper felt jerking in the steering and slow lift on FEL. Decided to add hydraulic fluid until it could be seen in the case. Was unaware of dip stick. Tractor was 5 gallons overfilled. Will this cause any damage? Have removed excess oil and now dealing with no hydraulics at all.

Over filling hyd system for a short period shouldn't hurt hyd system. Check frt hyd pump drive coupler to be sure it hasn't stripped out and that the pump is spinning with the engine. What type of loader control is utilized scv or ind valve? How long since hyd filter was changed and trans.sump screen cleaned???

Thanks so much for your reply. I will get at the coupler and check it. It uses an SCV for loader control. I have enough pressure to rasie the FEL once when cooled down. Have intermittant periods of steering assistance during operation. . 3 point rasies at start and then drops. I have changed the filter. Trying to find the trans.sump screen. Fluid is dark brn/greenish, a bit milky. Is it worth draining and replacing fluid? I have a service manual on order. Of course in the middle of hay baling and trying to nurse it along. Thanks again!

Hyd oil with milky color is detrimental to wet brake & clutches. Yes I would change hyd oil ASAP. Check shifter handle boots for cracks and hyd filler neck cap for breather plugging as both will contribute to milky(water) in oil. The photo I posted is an incorrect one for your model tractor but it is the best one I've found to show where to access the screen.

Loader hydraulics need flushing too.
Does the Scv supply a joystick boom and bucket control? Or is the tractor equipped with two SCV's and no joystick/loader control is used?
If the loader oil just dumps into the trnasmission case instead of returning via a ported filter cover . On a Dubuque or Mannheim tractor. The loader, backhoe, hydraulic motor and some log splitters will never operate without noise, cavitation and jerking.
