JD 2305 and PTO Over-run Clutch - Good Idea??

I have a KK XB 4 ft. rotary mower. I haven't been able to use it much, but was wondering if the ORC was a good idea? Maybe it would take some abuse/ load off the PTO?

Any thoughts?

Your tractor has a independent PTO, so you don't need and "overrun clutch", they are for older tractors. See a good description HERE

I think what you are referring to is a "slip clutch" that will slip if the cutter hits a solid object, like THIS

Whether you need one will be determined I think by what you plan on cutting, and in what area you are cutting in...If you are cutting tall grass/weeds in a familiar area, without known rocks and stumps then you probably don't need it, but if cutting saplings in rock laden area that has never been traversed before if might be safe to have one.

I understand the slip clutch vs. shear bolt concept.

I was just curious is the sudden stop of motion of the high mass rotary cutter would have ill effects on the PTO hardware?

I don't think you need a ORC with the hydro-electric PTO your tractor has, but that is my opinion...

Rotary cutters are one of the main compact utility tractor attachments, so they are tested behind the tractors for sure. They won't hurt the PTO system or PTO brake. Everything in there is wet (clutch pack, brake) so there is very, very little wear on the guts. Just enjoy your tractor!

Whether you need a PTO Slip Clutch or not is a matter of personal preference. I have a friend who swears by them. I don't own one as I have not been able to get my hands on one. I will likely buy one this year.

The problem is this, when you encounter the wayward stump or rock in the field which wasn't there the last time you mowed (bad luck!), replacing the Grade 2 bolts (shear pin) is a pain in the rump. I'm sick of it. A properly adjusted slip clutch alleviates the momentary stress encountered when the pin shears. Never, under any circumstances should you use a Grade 5 or Grade 8 bolt as a shear pin. You are inviting trouble into your PTO case if you do. People do it and have no issues but, for me those Grade 2 bolts are cheap compared to one tear down and repair.

There is no way to say whether it's worth it or not for you. If you have a major repair to your PTO system, you might think you should have bought one. However, there are people who go decades without them and have no major issues. I'll take it as cheap insurance.

bought a tiller with slip clutch last year, first time I've owned anything with a slip clutch. I really like not replacing shear pins! either of these will negate the need for a ORC.
