As a followup for anyone in a similar boat (not an experienced engine mechanic, doesn't want to pay a pro-wrench, but adept enough to fumble your way through, etc) if you replace your injectors you will also want to replace the "gasket" (brass washer with two holes in it, goes on top of injector/under return line) at the same time. They're ~$7 from JD or $3 from an auto parts place if they are willing to do some digging with your measurements of the gasket. I did NOT replace mine (didn't know it's a one time part) and had a tiny (tiny...) leak from two injectors. Replaced them and no more leaks.
The little tractor is still running strong and avoided being a part of a burn pile! It did, however play a large part in the big burn pile weekend last weekend. No JD's on fire though.
