JD 2720 pops out of 4 wd

I know a few people had this problem with their 2520 but I can't seem to find the real fix except that there is a spring and 2 balls to replace.
1 Has anyone ever fixed this themselves?
2 What are the part numbers to from John Deere

Thank you jgayman I ordered the parts above through my local dealer with also parts #M800448 John Deere SEAL and
#CH14926 John Deere PACKING. (Numbers 1 and nine)
I'm hoping this is all I would need.
Has anyone installed these apparently upgraded springs? Any install tips?

Do you have the 2720 technical manual? If not, you may want to purchase one before attempting this repair. Looking at the photos it appears the front drive is accessed from inside the center case. It doesn't seem like you can do anything without splitting the tractor. Maybe someone who has actually done it will comment.

Yes, I purchased a tech manual shortly after I purchased the tractor.
I have to do my homework on it before I tear into it.

Did you have take the whole tractor apart?

Not yet, seems every time I get ready to start I need the tractor to do some work.

Does 4wd stay on even when you put it in 2wd?

No, it will pop out (disengage) out of 4 wd but not enough to turn the dashboard light off
I can disengage out of 4wd with no problem

Where do you think the grease came from in that last photo? Do you have a wider shot of this showing the entire case opening?

As someone with a 2720 I really appreciate these photos.

I always wondered why I never seen grease coming out somewhere when I did the linkage, now I know
I’ll clean it up and get more pictures.

I'll bet mine is the same because there is that one fitting under the right floor board where you never see grease come out. One time I pumped extra grease in there in an attempt to have it appear and still nothing. Now I know where all the grease is sitting. Hopefully it cannot cause any trouble in there.

Thank you for the photos. Yep... 1 to 2 tubes of grease seems about right. Once it is all cleaned out, can you tell which zerk it comes from and why?

I’m still hard at it. I had a hard time getting the hi and low range shifter off the shaft, I broke the 2 jaw puller and ended up taking a hand grinder and carefully cut as far as I could then take a small chisel to spread it just a little. I played with that thing 4 hours.

Wow... I can only imagine what this repair would cost at the dealer. And all for a simple 4WD lever detent.
