JD 3010

I am a novice to tractors and am purchasing my first one. I am getting ready to buy a 3010 JD. My question is this. It has an external mounted hydrulic tank on the left fender operating an F11 Farmhand loader. It leaks some but will replace the seals. I have not seen another 3010 with an external tank. What does this mean and is it a bad idea to get into this tractor, or is that normal?

Is loader operating off of an external hyd pump on the pto or tractor hyd's? If ext hyd pump then an ext. tank is required. Before you purchase tractor be sure to check for correct pto shaft operation and that the rear stub shaft that bolts on with 4 bolts is snug & bolts are tight.

That is hard to say. Does the three point hitch and power steering work ok? Some early 3010's had a 4 piston pump that wouldn't operate a loader as fast as some people would like. Maybe they used external tank and pump to keep scv couplers free. If tractor hydraulics are good, the loader could be converted to operate that way if you like.

I think you're getting the 2510/2520(4 piston pump)confused with the 3010(8 piston pump). IIRC the 2510/2520 were the only models with the 4 piston hyd pump.

I will guess that the Farmhand loader was probably transplanted from some other tractor that didn't have a large enough hyd pump. Most closed center JD tractors have enough pressure & flow to operate a loader from the factory hyd pump.
