As Glen mentions, keep the tractor moving to disengage the 4wd. Or, put a little pressure on the lever and change directions.

There is torque on the drive train and that can build up making enough pressure that disengaging is tight. Better to relieve that pressure by moving the drive train a bit (quicker if changing direction) than forcing the lever while dead still. Break-in period has nothing to do with it. If working right, it will/should always be snug/tight.

Ran the 3520 this wkend in MFWD. When I parked in the shed I moved forward a little bit and the lever disengaged smoothly like it does when engaging.

The hydraulic cylinder is on machines with electronically controlled transmissions. This would be the eHydro and ePowerReverser. Some 4x10 machines have the mechanical Hydro or mechanical PowerReverser. Some have the mechanical SyncShift. That one is the SST. All these other transmissions replace the hydraulic cylinder with a mechanical lever that will put the tractor in 4WD only when the lever is placed in that position. The lever will stay in whatever position you leave it.

I believed, until I read the JD info you posted, that my MFWD was disengaged mechanically by me pushing the lever down. It sounds like, however, that it has the hydraulic cylinder.

I wouldn't think an operator of an eHydro would feel any resistance when the lever is thrown because all its really doing is throwing a switch...but I don't know why there would be a lever...why not just a switch to power or unpower the cylinder?

Maybe I need to go fire up the tractor and get it wound up and see what she does....its still new to me.

I think you are still not understanding what I am saying. Your tractor is not involved in any way with this information about the hydraulic cylinder. That is only on some of the 4210, 4310, 4410, 4510, 4610, 4710 (4x10 series) tractors. Some of those tractors do not have a 4WD lever of any kind. They only have a small electric pushbutton on the fender console. These are the only tractors with the pushbutton. Your tractor, like most others, has a lever that is directly mechanically connected to the gear engagement.

AHA! That explains it! Thanks! I'm such a noob at tractors.

This thread tells me that I should go to my JD dealer and see about getting a repair manual. The owners manual, naturally, doesn't have this type of info in it. Or did you find the schematics online?
