I hear a click , not certain if it’s the solenoid or not now that you said that. I know there is one for the relay is what I assume. Its a solid click , I guess I have to pay more attention to it. I will try it again later and see if I hear 2 clicks, one for the solenoid and then a second for the glo plug relay. I did however the other day unplug the relay that’s mounted on the front of the radiator and it still started. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Just checked , tractor starts up, no audible click when key is turned . If I turn the key and wait for about 10-15 seconds I do hear a click .

I twice had a similar startup problem with a John Deere 4600.

One time, the nut that holds the positive cable to the alternator became very loose. Battery was not recharging. Tightened it up--problem solved.

The other time, I had internal corrosion in the main cable going from the battery to the starter, thus decreasing the amps fed to starter. Test by using a thick gauge jumper cable from pos battery terminal directly to starter bolt. Replaced corroded cable--problem solved.

It will only be one click. Usually it's within the same time all the dash panels light up when in "run" position. That 10-15 second later click is probably the "pull-in" of the solenoid disengaging.

Your 4100 doesn't have automatic preheat with the glow plugs does it? Usually its an orange indicator light on the dash that would go off once you hear that click. If its like my 4300 you have to push the key in and hold to activate the preheat system but I could I could be wrong.

And yes it is one click, I actually put my hand on that timer when the key was on and it didn’t lick so the solenoid is making that audible click. Assuming that it is working properly, I would think that the click means it’s moving the plunger. Wonder if it’s possible that it could be restricted fuel. Fuel filter was checked by the mechanic and he said it was fine. Also said on my next maintenance I will replace it .

The JD 4100 is in a different model line-up from the 4200, 4300, 4400, 4500, 4600, and 4700. The 4100 is a basic Yanmar painted green, iirc.

Ok good to know. Trying to make sense of this starting procedure, I guess I have to read other over more thoroughly. So the fuel gets ignited by compression and the glow plugs (timer) really does not have to work to start. I have unplugged it just for kicks and it still started.

Solenoid on mine had to be changed. I got distracted and left the key on for about 5 minutes and it would crank but wouldn't start.

It sounds like your battery is not quite strong enough to spin the engine properly. I would start by cleaning all the battery cable connections, even the ground wire attached to the frame. Check the cables to make sure they are large enough and there isn't any corrosion in the cable.

A 425 CCA battery is not a heavy battery, so check that out also. I try to buy as high CCA battery as possible when I replace a battery.

So I used the interstate site and plugged in the equipment and that’s the one it calls out . Only difference was 51 and the 51 r where the terminals are. In my machine it shows the terminals back by the radiator but mine for some reason was turned around which still works. I put it in the way it was, probably some one could not find the other, either way works.

The John Deere site calls out a 433CCA battery, close enough I guess.
