JD 4100 with MMM---what kind of \"cotter keys\"

In one year I must have lost 6 or more pins that hold the mower on---or 3PH arms ect.

I have used the "hairpin" style (one side straight and the other has --bumps-- that wrap particilaly around the pin as you slide the retainer thru the pin) and standard old cotter keys that are split and the ends spread either direction.

Are some of these better at not falling out than others.

The best, although not the most convenient, is the regular cotter pin. As you say, they require you bend the split ends with a plier, and then bend them back when you want to remove them.
Brush is really rough on most all the others.
