Hey thanks for the quick reply. I talked to the parts manager today at the local dealer, he mentioned he would pull up the most up to date version of the DTAC and study it and get back with me on my options. During disassembly, the only parts that looked slightly worn to me were the bronze bushing (#12 in the diagram) and the upper pinion bearing seemed to have a little more slop in it than it should (#10 in the diagram). Everything else looked relatively in tact for an 18yr old tractor. If I can find a bushing, I'm tempted to just replace that and the seals and let it roll. I understand that the replacement bushing from John Deere is made for the newer modified housing, so it seems I am on my own for finding a replacement. Problem is, the original pinion diameter is 27mm, and there aren't any off the shelf bushings in that size that I have found....... yet. We shall see, I will let you know what I figure out. You should be able to just unbolt the upper housing (holds the pinion gear) from the lower housing (holds the ring gear) and just smack with a mallet to separate the two. I used a plastic mallet to get mine apart, and had to whack it pretty hard a few times - they get hung up on the dowel pins and the upper housing bushing.
Sorry for the late response. I'm curious to know if you've had any progress with this repair. The photos don't look good, it looks like the housing is pretty chewed up where the bearing seats... I'm not 100% sure, but if you replace that entire housing it may come fully assembled, which may be the route you have to take. I'm not sure how there was a gap between the upper and lower housing unless the bolts came loose. Let me know what you find out.
As for the repair goes on my 4115, I received the parts from the dealer today. I'm hoping to fit check everything and make sure it goes back together this weekend. I will share photos / part numbers as soon as I'm finished.
well, everything was chewed up pretty good... over $600 in parts.. needed a new Gear case (found one used for $155...new they are $350), new upper gear case with Pinion shaft, sleeve etc ($318) plus all bearings, clips and seals, o-rings and gasket that didn't come with it... the only salvageable pieces left were the gear case cover, final gear and bearing assembly... It's all assembled now....
Quick questions. Do I just use standard 80/90 weight ear oil?
Does the front axle housing use the same gear oil?
and I assume I remove the lower small plug fill with oil until gear oil starts to come out the top hole?

My 4410 specifies low viscosity Hy-Guard for the front axle. On my tractor the lower plug on the front wheel gear case is for draining oil. If you remove it make sure you tighten it back in. I had one fall out after draining the oil. Also on my 4410 there is a dip stick on the yellow plug. You fill to the mark on the dipstick.
I just put in 80W-90 gear oil in my front axle, the service manual mentions this viscosity and it meeting the GL-5 which is what you should able to find at any local auto parts store. On my 4115, there was a fill plug at the top of the final drive housing, on the cover. You can fill the final drive (end housings that contain the ring gear) independently of the fill port on the top right side of the axle. I filled each end, then topped off at the top right side of the axle. I just got it back together and all is well so far. I will post some photos in the next couple of days. Turned out that I needed more parts that I though since the right side pinion was really chewed up. Luckily though I was able to get all of the correct sized parts and didn't have to order new housings. It still cost about $300 total though in parts!

Hi Gang! I have a 2003 JD 4110 with about 650 hrs and noticed that I was having the same issue with the front axel leaking. As soon as I get the thing back, my son is moving some trees. I'am going to take a good look at it. In my search I found some part no# that I'll list. Numbers from the site, #22 seal CH14665, #23 sleeve M807497, #24 snap ring M807879 and #25 bearing LVU800252. If you guys with 4110 can list what you ended up replacing that might improved the chances of no more failures it would be great. Thanks Ray
