JD 4200
I've got a JD 4200 that I bought new a few years back. Anyways I'm getting it ready to sell.

First, I'm replacing all the plastic except for the floorboard and the fenders. Also replacing the broken fuse box cover and latch. When replacing it, and cleaning it all up, I see the actual fuse/relay box is very dirty and nasty, a lot of dirt and filth everywhere. Anyone have any advice on how to clean this area?? Can I pull all the fuses and relays, disconect the battery and power wash it, let dry for a few days before using it??

Second, In the past, this little tractors brakes would lock up. I would have to crawl under it and bang the rear brake lever back open. Got so bad I finally disconnected it. With Hydro its not been a problem not having or using the brakes. Is there is fix for this or just clean and lube??

Thirdly, When I get it back into shape, whats a 16 YO clean JD 4200, Hydrostat, FEL, 1000 hours and a 60" mowing deck worth??

Thanks

those brake shafts were famous for sticking, lubing the shaft good and working it, and being sure the big spring under the dash hasn't broken are about all you can do from the outside.

If you're gonna wash that panel, I REALLY suggest you don't use a water hose, unhook the battery and get a can of electrical contact cleaner from the auto parts store
and use that to clean it and then blow it dry

I just use compressed air to get the dirt out. It won't be sparkling clean but clean. If you want you can use starting fluid and air after disconnecting th battery. It doesn't cause corrosion and drys quick.

Price depends on a few things. Tires, and tire condition and which loader.

I just bought a 4210 with 1600 hrs and 300x FEL. To me the newer FELs add more value due to the lifting capacity increase. I paid 9700 but put in about 500 hundred for all the maintenance items and new rear axle seals.

Some say the 4x00 series is going for more since they are not the electronic hydro and people don't won't to deal with the cost and problems of ehydro on an older tractor. In MI I saw similar tractors like mine but the 430 FEL going for several thousand more. I wanted the newer loader so i jumped on this one. I knew this one needed a few things and did the work myself but would have scared a lot of people off. He was asking 10500 which I've seen similar at 13k.

The 430 is functionally a better loader than the 300x, it just doesn't have the stylish curved arms. The 430 lifts almost a foot higher and has several hundred more pounds capacity. The 430 also has linked curl cylinders so you can curl/dump farther and faster. It's more comparable to the 300cx which is functionally very similar, but with curvy arms.

Having used both, I will say that I would gladly pay an extra couple thousand for the 430/300cx over the 420/300x. The extra height allows me to load my 10 yd TA dump truck from level ground. 6" less lift and I would be building ramps. The extra lifting capacity is invaluable as well.

I didn't realize the 430 was that much of a better loader. I have the 300CX on the 4410 and it is way better than the 300X. They say the 300CX does not fit on the 4210, so I don't know if that is the same for the 4200 that it only takes the 420 loader. Not sure if that is true, or they just don't sell it because of the lower HP rating.

I want to say the 4200 has a shorter wheelbase than the 4300/4400, but the 420 and the 430 both work on the 4300 so I don't know why the 4300 wouldn't physically fit. It might tend to tripod or overload the front axle though.

Yeah. Not sure. I know the WB was shorter but never looked to see what is different to loose the distance. The 4200 and 4210 both have lower hydraulic pressure settings and flow rates as well so might be pat of it too.
