Buying Advice JD 5105M vs. JD 6330

One thing that you have to put up with the whole time of ownership is engine noise! Quieter engines are normally from a better smoother working design.

My recommendation would be to listen to both at the same time, if not possible at least at two different times and you should hear the difference. I'd be taking the 6000 series because of that reason on it's own!

Have listened to both models? Since both have the same size engine and are turboed, seems to me the better cab would make the difference.

I'd pick the one I liked the cab best.

Everyone is voting bigger is better. I don't. By the 5105M. It is big enough, has a long enough wheelbase, and is heavy enough to do everything you are doing and more. The bigger tractor is going to use more fuel, which is going to be getting a lot more expensive. Save that money for fuel, feed, repairs, fencing, dinner, another cow... There is always something to buy.

My 2 cents

5101e would be cheaper if he is going to go that route.

I use my 5525 for everything from round baling and dirt work. It has been a good tractor and I can't justify upgrading it but if I had to do it over I would have a 6 series.

They both have the same size engine so power should be about the same. A large round baler like a 535 is a heavy load and the heavier tractor would handle it better.

Another consideration is cooling. I wish the radiator was easier to clean on my 5525.

Those two tractors will be fine. 5105e may be a different story.

Someone mentioned the engines are the same. Haven't looked, but if so-why would you say more fuel useage for the 6's?

I've had a chance to operate the 6330 and the 5085m and I would go with the 6330. The tractor with a pq trans makes a nessasity for Baling hay and cutting with changes in crop conditoins. Just a very easy tractor to operate in a baling conditions.

My guess is it would take more fuel because it weighs more, so more energy required. I don't think the difference would be much.

JD 5105M vs. JD 6330

Iエve been a member of this forum for a while now reading and researching John Deere tractors in the 75-100 hp range. A little background first. My father and I have 45 head of cattle and bale around 350 round bales of hay per year in east central Kansas. We have our JD 535 baler paired with a 1992-75hp JD 2755. Currently we cut the hay with a JD 260 disk mower paired with a 1975-84hp Ford 7000. This tractor has been rock solid through the years but we've decided to update this fall.

We have narrowed our decision to either a new 5105M or a slightly used (<500 hours) 6330. The 5105M is 90hp at the PTO and the 6330 is 85hp. Both tractors are priced in the upper $50エs.

. . .

I'm looking for suggestions. Which of the two tractors listed above would you choose and why? Thanks for your time.

I would just like to address some of the points that have been discussed. Same motor, so that's not an issue. Hydraulic flow: the 5M series is actually higher. Interior noise level: 6330 is 71db, 5105 is 80. Not much difference there. I can talk on my cell phone and nobody believes that I'm working the tractor. The 6 series is a little bit longer and a little heavier, if that matters to you. (for me, I PREFER the shorter tractor for stacking hay in the barn) As far as the ride comfort, if you get the radial tires on the 5M, I'll bet you won't miss the weight or wheelbase of the 6. As for fuel usage, the 5M series has the option of a 540/540E pto selector. For pto powered equipment that doesn't require as much hp, the 540E position develops 540rpm pto speed at only 1700rpm engine speed. Now, that will save fuel. (all of the above quoted specs are straight from Deere's website) Another thing to consider is that the 6330 would be "as is." You have to take it as it comes. If you buy a new 5M, YOU get to pick the options. Also, financing on the new tractor is 0% through Oct 29th. How much interest will you pay on the 6330?

I recently bought a 5085M (Cab) to replace a NH7610S open station tractor. Both are MFWD with loader. I cut hay on 60 acres with a JD 265 mower and bale with a JD 457 round baler. I didn't even consider the 6 series tractors becuase of their size. (that's why I sold the 7610S - it was too big for many tasks)
