JD 5205 Sputtering issue

My tractor has been doing this every now and again, but it has started to do it worse now.

The issue is that when I am going the tractor wants to sputter. Over time I notice more blue smoke coming out of the exhaust until i stop or until the sputtering stops.

I have no idea what is causing this issue. I changed the fuel filter and it ran fine for a bit but started again.


My buddy borrowed my tractor last week and he got some water out of the fuel seperator/filter. He said when he opened the drain valve that he could hear suction through the filter but the tractor was turned off. Could it be the fuel cap?


I notice there is a small inline silver filter behind the engine. Maybe that is the issue? What can it be?

Could it be the fuel cap?

The fuel cap is easy to check - just leave it loose and run the tractor but don't you have two fuel caps on your 5205?

Yes sir. Two of them. I am going to get that inline filter and loosen the caps.

It is unlikely, but I suppose possible, that both of your fuel caps became clogged at the same time. Let us know how it runs after you have changed that filter.

Replaced the inline silver filter.....now it runs...great! Thanks everyone!

I think you had better investigate the reason that filter was clogged enough to cause problems.
