I've been having issues with the hydraulic pickup screen plugging up (likely due to the brake lining). Until I can fix the brakes, I've been changing the fluid and cleaning pickup filter regularly. Espically when I noticed the hydraulics jerking.

This last time I changed fluid and filters and filling fluid, I can't get any movement from any of the hydraulics at all.

I have spun off the canister filter and it doesn't have any new fluid in it.

I've read some posts about the system not needing to be primed but can loosen the top fittings and pour hydraulic fluid into them (however I can't seem to get them broke loose from the pump).

Any suggestions?

It's not uncommon for the pump to need a little help picking up prime, particularly so if the fluid is drained and the system left dry for extended periods. Removing the outlet lines and pouring some oil into the ports can help in that regard. Those fittings on the pump can indeed be a fight. I find that a slightly thinned down end wrench will fit under the line nut on the steel line and onto the adapter fitting. Sometimes it takes two pair of hands, two wrenches, and a cheater pipe to separate the line nut from the adapter because the adapter will unscrew from the pump before the line nut will break loose.

Harry,

Thanks for the advice. I was able to get the smaller fitting loose with two large crescent wrenches and a cheater bar. Didn't like the setup but I don't have any wrenches that are that large. I tried but couldn't even get the big nut off with my setup.

The pump (on the smaller fitting side) only took 1/4 (small) funnel till it wouldn't take any more however that was just the fix. When I fired it up it took a few seconds of moving the hydraulics and they started working.

Can't tell you how frustrated I was when I didn't have any controls after the fluid change.

Thanks again for the help.

Don't be surprised if you see it happen again some day. Only next time you'll be ready. If/when it does, don't run it so long waiting for it to prime on its own. Running any gear pumps dry is hard on the internals. Things get hot in there fast and pump life (and performance) can be reduced. The adapters in the pump need to be tight, yes, but the line nuts don't need to be AS tight as they were. They have O rings on the faces that seal, so the nut can be snug, but not "jammed on tight" so it won't unscrew next time.
