Tractor
John Deere 5310
I'm looking at buying a 1998 with 2250 hours... This will be my first tractor! Should I be looking for any wear or ask if something was replaced or serviced at a certain # of hours.... I've been told that all the routine service has been done on schedule.. It looks like it is in good shape! Also, the price is 18,000 with a bucket and forks both in very good shape.... Is that a great deal or a good deal or a bit high?
Thanks!

The area that I would look at is the transmission and what the tractor had been used. If it has a collarshift or syncshuttle it has a dry clutch, if used a fair amount for loader work down the road you could need a new clutch. Big ticket item as the tractor has to be split in half. See how much free play there is in the clutch, less than half inch normally means clutch wear. I have included the URL to the owners manual, shows you how to check the free play. The manual also includes servicing. Make sure the tachometer is working, as hours may not increase if the tach is not working. Make sure the loader can pick up the front of the tractor when lowered, will give you some idea on the hydraulics.

On the price does it have MFWD and what type of transmission? I have included URLs on sites to compare prices.

I have 5210 same tractor less the turbo. I have been very happy with it. Literally my tractor starts with just a flick of the key. Some people express concern on the noise of the engine, I wear ear protectors.

If you decided to purchase it, post back and I will share with you some URLs you may find of interest. You may also what to search this site to see what others have said.

If it does not have MFWD and you are going to be doing a loader work, you may NOT be happy with your purchase. This is NOT a comment on the tractor, just that I feel you need MFWD if you are going to do much loader work.

Cab or open staion, two wheel drive or four wheel drive will make the biggest difference in price.Next the transmission will make a big difference on price (there were three choices, collar shift, syncro/shuttle, and power reverser). Also the other options, such as how many SCVs does it have, E-PTO?

Seems like these tractors hold their value really well. Perhaps too well.

It seems like you're looking at a decent deal, but just for your own reference, you should see what it would take to get into a new 5E tractor. By the time you figure discounts and financing deals, you might not be as far from a new tractor as you think.

That's how I ended up with a new 5303 in 2008.

Whatever you do, post pictures.

OK...Here is a picture of the 5310 I'm planning on purchasing.... I know I could pay 10 or 12 thousand more and get a new one but I'm going to be happy just to finally have a tractor of my own and can always upgrade down the road!

Yikes. I didn't realize the price difference was so great now.

That's a nice looking rig. Those crazy turf tires make it look like it's set up for drag racing.

Looks nice. The seat looks in good shape that tells me it has either been kept inside, covered or replaced. The 540 loader is what I have it has the parking stands often those are missing. I have not seen a 5X10 tractor with type of exhaust pipe, not that there is anything wrong with it. Overall the paint looks good Rust-Oleum makes some nice JD green paint. You will be surprised some wax and an electric buffer and that hood and fenders will shine right up. Do not know what you plan to use it for those turf tires may not be good in the mud. WD-40 will take that Martin sticker off. Manual URL on the loader included. At least my tractor almost everything is metric.

Did you check the clutch? How does it start?

Unless you know the person, I would replace all the filters and fluids. If you do the hydraulic fluid replace the o-rings and make sure you have a wrench to fit the filter. You will not get if off putting a screw driver through it. Luckily I learned that from someone elses experience. Also fill the fuel filter before putting it on.

I am guessing you will not be doing any haying, but that fork lift can be converted to a hay spear.

Just in case you do not know this. You have to be stopped to shift gears with collarshift. If you plan to replace the type of tires the rims need to be replaced as well. You must be STOPPED to put it in park.

Let us know what you decide.

Definitely check the clutch. In addition to checking the existing free play at the pedal, there is an adjustment turnbuckle under the metal tunnel between the footboards. Check to see if there is any more adjustment left.

The collar shift trans is not the best option for regular loader use. It is very clutch intensive when your loading and changing directions frequently. Plus you have to stop completely for gear and direction changes.

Thanks for all the info everyone!

Let us know if you purchase it. I have started to pull together various URLs you may find interesting.

If you do not mind me asking what are you plans for the tractor? Since the only tractors I have seen with those tires spend their day on the golf course.

I hope they work OK... I'm going to be using it for mowing clover & alfalfa mostly.... I have about 10 acres of that and I plant around 6 acres of fall food plots.... and then the various other stuff like grading the drive and moving gravel on occasion... It's for my hunting ranch in Iowa. I guess I could change them out if they are a problem... any idea what a used set of tires & wheels might run?

I do not know about the cost of tires and rims. My neighbor got some off brand AG-1 rear tires and paid $300 each and thought he got a really deal. Note if you do change tires, because it has MFWD on it, there is a size relationship between the front and rear.

Some light reading for you. These things may not apply to your tractor, but it is nice to know if the problem should come up. Do a search on 5310s on this site there have been reports of problems with the temperature sensor going bad and causing the tractor not to start. Simple fix.

Sometimes with my tractor I find it hard to get in and out of MFWD. With the clutch in and just a very little roll, it goes in and out very easy. With those big tires on it, unless for safety reasons, I would avoid make turns while in MFWD as the front tires have to skid a little to make the turn.

Sounds like you might be doing some bush hogging. If what you are cutting is high, I would take the forks off and put the remaining part on the loader and tilt it down a little this way it will push down what you are about to go over, so you can see easier and avoid it rubbing against the bottom of the tractor.

Have fun!

JD5210: How does the search engine work for the Deere 'Tips & Troubleshooting' page?

From here I enter a model number, select a machine, and enter a keyword. When I click on submit nothing happens.

I did not use the search engine you referenced to find the URLs I posted. A few years back John Deere had a different search box in the upper right hand corner that I used.

Thanks.

With respect to the link I posted, is there a more efficient way to grab data for a specific tractor?

I tried entering "5000 +tractor" in the little search box in the top right corner, but it didn't come back with all the links you posted.
