JD 655
Hello All!

After doing an oil change my 655 will slowly gain oil. The tractor runs great, no excessive smoke, great power, starts easily, but I have this issues that seems to be getting worse. The engine has ~1k hours.

The dealer suspects it is the injector pump. They even gave me the name of a rebuild facility that wants $450-$650 to do a rebuild. They don't suspect injectors because it runs well. Is there anything else I should consider before throwing $$ at it?

Thanks

Over 100 people looked at this and no one knows.? :(

Can someone at least tell me a better site to get info from if I'm fishing in the wrong hole?

Maybe this can help:
The engine is a Yanmar 3 cylinder. I would guess a 1990-91 vintage.

Thanks

That's about the only source of extra oil. You should be able to confirm that by the smell test. Crankcase oil doesn't smell like diesel normally. You may not need a full rebuild if it runs OK, just a seal replacement.

I'm very competent with gas engines, but not diesel. Can I change the seals? If so, is there a "how to" article I can follow?

Does the oil smell like diesel?

You need a service manual. You can get one from Deere. Will probably run you around $100 but you will recover that the first repair you do. Make sure you ask if the manual covers the engine as you may need a separate engine manual. Deere's manuals are among the best out there.

To me any oil from a diesel engine smells like diesel!
I'll check again to see if I notice anything distinct.

It could be the hydraulic pump seal leaking into the engine if it doesn't smell like diesel.Check and see if the hydraulic is low.
There are no parts available through John Deere-just the injector pump for $1000.16

Thankfully the hydraulic fluid never moves!

Hi,
My JD 855 has just developed exactly the same problem (slowly gaining oil).
Did you manage to find out what was causing it?
Nick
