JD 655 diesel making oil - Injector pump?

Thankfully the hydraulic fluid never moves!

Well then it must be fuel going into the oil.
Does your tractor have a mechanical fuel pump, the seal could be gone on it, if it does.
Oil and diesel fuel have a different smell, try doing a smell test on both and you'll see,,
then, smell your oil, you should be able to tell.
Rebuilding an injection pump on your own is not advisable, and almost nearly impossible to find a detailed way of doing it, these are well kept secrets for a reason.

Unless you have friends that work in a diesel shop and are very happy to give detailed instructions over the phone to help you remove the pump. Or in my case how to time the pump from scratch. ie find tdc on the engine, figure out degrees before tdc and then install and bleed the pump.

There is no magic here. It's a very precise mechanical device and needs to be treated with care. A John Deere manual will give detailed instructions on how to remove and install an injection pump. I usually go to the local dealer and the service manager is willing to either loan me the book needed or print off the pages I need. Taking an injection pump apart isn't very hard. It's the putting it back together so that everything works the way it should that's the problem.

Sometimes good people make a video of what to do. Doing an internet search for a video on replacing an injection pump would help you to decide if it's something you feel comfortable with.

Hi,
Thanks for the helpful feedback.
I will explore reconditioned and second hand units, look at the videos and then judge whether a rebuild of the existing unit is worth contemplating.
I am an engineer with plenty of petrol engine experience but have not worked on diesels before.
Regards Nick

Had this happen on a JD 830 check the diaphram in the transfer pump as the injection pump could not introduce oil into crankcase. However the diaphram in the transfer pump goes straight to crankcase. Hope this helps as the price difference and technical ability is miles apart, fortunately I have a friend who used to own a diesel repair shop

Hi David,
I have already replaced the mechanical fuel pump without any improvement.
The fuel injector pump sump is connected to the engine sump and so I guess that is the problem.

The breather on the engine is now blowing heavy white smoke when under load and I can only assume that this is the diesel in the engine oil burning off. I am ensuring that the oil level in the engine does not rise higher than the full level on the dipstick.
Regards Nick

I changed the oil and the rate of gain seemed to slow afterwords. I never dug into it further.

Thanks for the feedback. Mine is still getting worse and so I have not been so lucky.
The tractor now blows smoke from the engine breather during use which is presumably the diesel burning off in the sump.

Be very careful with this issue,,
this is how "runaway diesels" are started.
The engine will start feeding off its own fuel fumes and start to rev high, it won't stop until it burns all of it's fuel and oil until she blows. Very dangerous.

I have to find a permanent solution but am struggling to find a fuel injection pump and don't even know if this will solve the problem. I have already replaced the mechanical fuel pump. Thank you for the warning.

It is possible for fuel to leak into the crankcase thru the Inj pump. The Inj pump is driven by a cam in the crankcase.
Inside the Injection pump all it has is metal to metal valves and seats. If one of the seat/valves gets excessive wear fuel
can get past the cam follower and down into the crankcase.
Send your inj pump out for rebuild
