Backhoe JD #7 Backhoe - swing cylinder rebuilding - how to dismantle?

Earlier last spring was when my second swing cylinder went, first one was year before. Both where complete redos cylinders so rusty couldnt be brought back. Two separate hydraulic shops did each cylinder for me. Asked parts guy in Easton, NY as to why swing cylinder is another 100 more this year than last, "quote" "as parts get older and not ordered as frequently the price goes up according. .... swing cylinders from deere for a #7 approaching $625.00 after tax, for one not two... I guess that's just the way it is...

Maybe retrofitting some Surplus Center cylinders would be an option... vs $625 for new Deere.

I've looked at cylinders at Surplus Center for my Blackhawk backhoe as my swing cylinders are pretty beat. They don't have anything near the length I need

What are the specs that you need?

I don't remember offhand. They're a 2" cylinder but the length's I found were either too long or short, by enough that I felt certain I'd have issues.

I'll revisit down the road when the current ones fail or my budget is more robust.

Is it possible to buy just a piston and cut the rod to length?

Kinda what I had in mind.
I've bought the "too long" ones and cut both the rod and the cylinder to the right length.
With a machine lathe, the cuts can be made and the cylinder welded back together the right length. Saved big bucks on a rebuild of a skidsteer.
Was just a thought.

I don't own a lathe.

Still... the idea opens possibilities. I'll keep it in mind.
