2004 New Holland TC24DA
Hi all
I stopped by a tractor dealer today and got a quote on a TC24DA with loader and a John Deere 855. The JD has 130 hours on it and it is a 1992. It has hydro trans, 4x4, and a 70A fel. Other than needing a can of green paint and a wax job it looked as new condtion. The dealer told me that they need $11,800.00 for it. Now I don't claim to know squat about tractor re-sale value but a tractor that's going on 13 years old was aprox. just shy of $4000.00 less than a brand new one..????? Which in this case was a TC24DA, I know they two completly different aninals, But. Whats up with this..?? Is this dealer yanking my chain or what...

Thanks in advance

Welcom to TBN. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
When I checked the price on another site, values were around $11,000. These tractors had many more hours than 130.

Is this the case of an Apples to Oranges comparison? The TC24 is a small frame 24hp tractor. I'm not sure what the 855's hp rating is, but I thought it was something in the low to mid 30's and the frame size may be larger as well.

I guess my thought is what are the tasks that the tractor will be used for? Once the tasks are laid out, then you can decide which tractor is a better fit for the the tasks at hand.

Other considerations might be warrenty or financing. But as I believe these are different sizes/power of machines, I think the primary concern is fitting the correct tractor to the 5 acre property size you own and then fitting it to the task uses. Are you mowing? Are you doing major landscape construction or are you just maintaing? As your property is 5 acres, I suspect you are not doing any real farming, but what types of implements do you feel you will need? Do you have tight spaces that favor a smaller tractor or do you have open spaces that favor a large mower deck with straight line mowing? Is getting the machine into the garage an issue that might favor the smaller tractor? Etc Etc

I don't know much about New Hollands, but those older Deere's (70 series, 55 series) are extremely solid machines.

However, to those of you who want the bells and whistles...those old Deere's are pretty dated.
A friend of mine traded his 855 with 950 hours or so on a 4310 Deere. The dealer gave him $12500 on trade and asked $13500 when they had it on their lot. I don't know what it went for, but knowing this dealer, they may have dropped a thou. That's not much depreciation over ten years...

So...TC24 or the 855...just depends if you want new. But that 855 has many years work left in it!

The 855 has 24 Gross HP and 19 at the PTO. There's a number of them on Machinefinder.com if you want to compare prices.
All the 55 series machines were smaller..the 755 through the 955...smaller rear tires and such. That doesn't mean they're wimps...probably some of the most solid tractors Deere ever imported.

I believe the 855 was a bit less than 30. My neighbor has a 955 and he says it is rated at a tad over 30. And yes it is a larger frame tractor. The New Holland TC29/33 would be more comparable to the 855/955.

Thanks for the reply Ron

I guess I'm leaning some what towards the JD because the rops is only 77" high and it also looks to have a wider stance. We have a low garage door 81", and a pretty steep hill.
From a performance stand point would you rate these two tractors pretty close, Hydrolics and power??It looked like the JD was slightly larger. I plan on buying a snow blower for the winter and moving some sand/dirt/"play" in the summer. We have a place in Kalkaska MI. A normal winter will 200" of snow

Thanks again

Pete

Murph, not sure what the correct number is, but the 790 is a 27hp tractor and the 990 is 40. The 55 series is a little different than the 90 series but I'm far from an expert on anything JD green (I do know about about Oliver green /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif but that is a different story).

It just strikes me that we are looking at an equipment mismatch and we have no idea what the better machine is for the job because we don't know the job(s) that will be done. Given only 5 acres, I would instinctively favor the smaller tractor just based on that.

Pete, now we have a bit more to go on. With 200 inches of snow do you want a front mount blower or a rear mount? What about mowing? Do you want to mow with this machine? You said playing with the FEL, so that does not denote the need for the heaviest unit, but I suspect both are plenty strong and I know the NH loader is best of class in those terms. As for fitting into the garage, I know a TC24 will fit into my garage and I have standard doors (but I don't know how high they are). The older JD will certainly save money and will do everything the NH will do and as has been stated there are many years of life in the machine.

I am not sure what the comparison is . Check some of the other post on this thread. Lots of good information.

I was always an Oliver fan. Drove a brand new 1655 one summer on a pea combine. Also drove a big White, can't remember the model putting down Anhydrous one summer. And the color is not so expensive!!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Just joshing the John Deere guys, I drove many a Deere and loved them also.
