I'll tell you one thing I didn't like about the 55 series Deeres...
The headlamps are on the fenders, just outboard of the operator's seat.
If the machine has a loader, the headlamps are just about useless!

Roy, the 55 series tractors were built intially in Horicon Wisconsin and later in Augusta Georgia. In 1989 I was able, with the involvement of my dealer, actually pick up my new 955 at the Horicon Works factory. I also had made arrangements to tour the factor before they loaded my new tractor on my trailer. It was pretty impressive.

I agree with many of the other posts. The high resale value suggests the tractors were a great value and well built. The tractors were some of the best with respect to quick attachment capability. Attaching the loader was about 2-3 minutes.

ANother feature that set the 55 series tractors apart was the ability to run separate implements at the same time. I could attach the loader, still keep the midmount mower on and also use a three point hitch attachment like the tiller. The mid and rear pto was engaged independantly. You can't do that on 4000 series tractor.

My neighbor has the 955. Yes he can use all implements at the same time but he can not pin up his midmower. In other words, if he dropped his tiller/3 point his mower would also go down. That is one thing he complained about with his 955. When he saw I could pin my TC29D up he kind of got jealous and went back to his dealer and they could not come up with a part number for him to do that. However, his deck comes off a lot easier than mine does. Now I am not positive about a kit for it, I am only going by what he told me??

The TC24 allows this as well, and the deck can be pinned in place. I never take my MMM off the TC, but I will pin it in the up position, a task that literally take less than 1 minute. Mid & Rear PTOs are operated independantly and can also be operated at the same time (although I'm not sure why you'd want to do that). I've said all sorts of things good about the loader so I won't bother repeating those things.

The 855 is about the size of a 4110 Deere. It's engine HP is 25, I think PTO was around 20 or 21. I know someone is gonna be offended by this comparison, but here it goes. The 855 is built sort of like a big lawn tractor. It's engine is not part of the frame but is mounted on twin frame rails supported by rubber motor mounts. I had one of these tractors a few years back. They are good tractors, but I believe I would opt for the new New Holland. You would be getting a new modern tractor, with a warranty.

On the 855 Deere I had you could lock the mower in the up position. It was a standard option with the tractor. The was a knob on the floor of the tractor that when turn clockwise would screw into the mower deck and lock it into the up position and free you to raise and lower the 3 point independent of the mower.

My 4110 can be set to rear, mid, or both PTOs running at the same time. Is this what you meant? I think all the 4000 series JDs do this don't they? I don't think this is new for the 4100 series.

Bob, I planned on a front blower at first because everyone that clears driveways for a living up there has front mounts, and heated cabs for that matter. But found that they cost about $2000.00 more than a rear mount. Our driveway is only about 600ft long. I figure a rear mount will work just fine, plus it would seem that it would easy sell down the road if I wanted upgrade to front mount. I own a Toro Z150 series with vac. system and thatching rake for fall clean up and mowing duties. The JD855 I looked at has a mid mount 60" mower deck thats currently on the tractor, I told the salesperson that I was not planning on mowing with the tractor so he offered to take it off and deduct $1000.00 from the price. I like the layout on both tractors, but I think I would be more comfortable with JD on our hill going down to the lake, it drops about 15 feet. the JD seems to sit lower and has a wider stance. But that 4 year 0% sure looks good on the NH. I let you guys know what I decide, I sure do appreciate all the feedback.

Thanks again
Pete

Cliff,
What we are saying is your mid mower would raise up and down with say a tiller in the back if that was what you were using. Some of the John Deeres you could not lock the mower up and out of the way when using the tiller as it was operated by the 3 point hitch. My neighbors 955 he could not do that. I also have a neighbor that has a 4100 and he can not do that. Now John Deere did make some kits that you could purchase on some of them for locking the mower up and out of the way. Another poster here says his 855 does. I am not sure nor not that familiar with which ones you could lock and which ones you can't.

I'm not sure why your neighbor's 955 wasn't able to lock the mower deck up. Maybe the parts were removed. Attached is a picture from JD Parts. The arrow is pointing to the round knob that you turn to lock the mower up. All the 855's and 955's I have seen had it.
